So, this year of our Lord 2026, the actual Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are in play, with War (everywhere now), Famine (due to environmental collapse), Death (inevitably following the other three) and now Pestilence...

I am delighted that I have signed The Fifth Inflection for the UK - this fantastically indefinable slice of legal speculative fiction is probably closest to The City and the City by China Mieville, but is flavoured with Gautam's unique and brilliant insight.

Have to say, the rise in subscriptions and the price of them, accompanied by the horrific push of AI into everything, makes me want to go back to Nokia brick phones with no Internet and buying all my media in physical form.

I mean, apart from all the ethical issues and the environmental issues of AI, does anyone else now struggle to read promotional posters on Facebook for restaurants and events etc? They are crazy busy, with lots of images, and words everywhere, and I can't just glance at them to get sensible info.

When I was freelance, I worked every weekend barring a very few over the course of five years. I'm still not recovered from that and believe I am suffering from burnout that has never been healed. Don't let it creep in, I beg you.

Was given a steroid injection on Tues to help with diagnosis of inflammation. I was told that if there was no inflammation, I might feel a small bump in wellness, but if there was, it would feel transformative. Today is the first day in five years I have been able to walk without any pain...

For pure entertainment, The Raven Scholar; for admiration at someone at the top of their IP craft, Hive by Dan Abnett; and for appreciation of character work, The Light Years by Elizabeth Jane Howard, I think. And still 91 days in which to read more possible favourites 😍

As a comparison, I read 16 books in 2020 and 18 in 2021, because I had zero attention span and could only re-read books I'd already tackled, rather than anything new. I lost two years of reading to that damn pandemic, and am only catching up now on releases from those two years.

Well, just finished my 80th book of the year. I set myself 80 as a reasonable goal (since I do cheat and add the books that I commission and work on, and I am sending out a good 14 or so out this year, I believe!) I think I might be able to hit 100 this year, which is going back to pre-pandemic days

...at least they had heart behind them. An AI pumping out romance novels will have no craft, no skill, no heat, no heart and no true imagination. And if someone comes at me, I challenge you to write a romance novel, if they're so damn easy and formulaic 😂

Amanda Rutter @alrutter.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
...it all looks serene and graceful and easy and as though anyone could do it, but behind the scenes there is a fuckload of paddling to get where they're going, which means that far from just anyone can achieve a competent romance novel. I have read baaaaaaad romance novels by human writers, but...

...sexy, because the writers have the consummate ability to decide when and how a first kiss must happen. Emily Henry is exceptional at scenes that don't even feature kissing, like literally an accidental brush of the fingers, and I am swooning. Romance books remind me of swans - from the outside...

...probably the best at writing characters - since the plot is often considered formulaic, it's the characters who have to shine and carry it, which means making their readers care *intensely* for those characters. Just awe-inspiring ability. And the heat scenes in romance can be off the charts...

It might be formulaic fiction, but by god, the skill it takes to craft a story so that you're rooting for the main characters to get together while *at the same time* knowing they will do so is an incredible level of story crafting and character developing. Of all genres, romance writers are...

I do read romance and this caught me in a ticked-off mood, because what gets me with brilliant human-crafted romance books is that we know the HEA is coming, but it's how each wonderful writer chooses to get there. Like, the very format removes tension, but the best of romance writers inject it.

As the weather starts to turn, I actually can't think of a much better book to snuggle up and read - this fantasy novel is standalone (although you can then pick up the Cemeteries of Amalo trilogy, which is also brill), incredibly kind, has stunning world-building and prose, and is cheap today!

I have spent time and energy on them. I have a very trusted dog walker/pet sitter to deal with them when I have my very rare holidays. I spend a lot of time with them. And I love them. But sometimes me and my husband will spend a full hour complaining about what one of them has done.

I love my three dogs intensely. I can't imagine my life without them. They are amazing, friendly, happy-go-lucky characters and bring joy every day. There are times when I hate them intensely, like when Rosie merrily rolls around in fox poo approx. ten mins before an important Teams call!

I can absolutely 100% guarantee that no submissions to me and no books I acquire and work on will be fed into AI. It's an absolute hard line ethical stance for me. You can also be sure that my computer isn't accidentally linked up because I have never used AI in any incarnation.
