Tapputi stands out as the world’s first chemist in ancient Babylonian Mesopotamia. Cited in a cuneiform tablet from approximately 1200 BC, she was a skilled perfume maker who blended flowers, oil, and calamus with cyperus, myrrh, and balsam.

Tapputi is credited with utilizing the first known still and authoring the earliest treatise on perfume creation, which has been preserved on a clay tablet. Additionally, she innovated a technique that employed solvents to create lighter and longer-lasting fragrances.
