Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Here's our latest talk! This time it was addressed to a room full of people from the Git ecosystem (GitMerge conference), hoping that they may be interested in our model and our scaling, so we can all keep moving forwards. We had some good feedback and great discussions after this.youtube.comChecking out another branch of VC - Raphaël Gomès & Pierre-Yves DavidYouTube video by GitButler 000

Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 06/08/2026The year is 2026 and I keep getting "invalid password" errors from websites (from very large companies!) by using passwords that are too long. 99% sure they're truncating silently on save and then failing to match. Come to think of it, I should have tried truncating to like 20 chars to see... 010
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 28/06/2026I personally have them configured to only show up if I have a certain shortcut chord active, so they're usually not there, but if I need them, I can just hold the shortcut. That's in VSCode 010
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 18/05/2026One of if not the best debut albums ever. The production alone is amazing 000
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 22/04/2026There is something endearing in the age of genAI to receive 90's-level spam like "HELLO WE OFFER LOANS. HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU NEED" 000
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 21/04/2026Honest advice (you didn't ask for): doing some regular mobility and core exercising, like 10m every day or every couple days will change so many details like... not needing a shoehorn. Sedentary jobs like ours have a tendency to make us think of our bodies only as transportation for our minds. 100
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 20/03/2026Sent a very cool boulder today. I climbed it a bit poorly but I'm still happy about it! youtube.com/shorts/kTEkI...youtube.com"Le Retour du Jedi" 7A (V6/7)YouTube video by Alphare33 000

Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 19/02/2026Hot take: this is completely fine in certain scenarios (also I've seen so much worse in the wild) 000
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 10/02/2026What's the deal with movies/series hiring definitely not French-speaking actors to play French roles? It's so obvious and removes me from the story 000
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 02/02/2026Gave two talks, prepared another one and animated a BOF at FOSDEM this weekend. I'm running on fumes an very few hours of sleep. As always the hallway track was the most interesting and probably impactful. Time will tell 😉 010
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 31/01/2026Thank you for the great drawing! And thanks for staying through this entire talk. I hope you enjoyed it 010
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 23/12/2025Setting aside the non-technical issues I have with LLMs, are they able to create actually good commits (smaller, atomic, explained, in logical order, leaving the project working and adding tests along the way, etc.) to the tune of what would fly in say Mercurial since you've had the experience? 010
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 17/12/2025Congrats on the beta. We've been using the now defunct Pytype. It's horribly slow, but it always yields much better results than others, thanks to its much deeper analysis. The Mercurial codebase being so weird, it'll be hard to migrate without significantly more typing (we'll have to it seems) 010
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 17/12/2025We had people (invested, well meaning volunteers) insist that we should use Microsoft Git 365 for CI instead of setting up our own runners and dealing with the hassle... We had to push back for many reasons, one being that Mercurial should not depend on GitHub, but also this kind of decision 000

Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 12/08/2025But it's souffle (breath), not soufflé (puffed up cake)? I agree it's funny though 100
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 06/08/2025In Python at least it's a "hope for the best" situation because all type analyzers give up given enough magic. There are no rules around separating static and dynamic in any way. I've heard of Mojo but never looked into it 010
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 06/08/2025I was like "huh I've never had a problem" and then just one hour later I get a breaking change in one of our tests due to OpenSSL... It's infectious 000
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 01/08/2025Can't make this up: I was writing code to translate known deadnames in metadata from our old bugtracker to our new one and I get this autocomplete 000
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 12/06/2025Truly one of the mysteries of our time. This hurts my French brain, so... j'ai mal à son cerveau ? 020

Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 29/12/2024FWIW, I've been using btrfs since 2019 with no issues and better performance for intense IO than the zfs setups I've seen at clients'. 110
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 03/12/2024Oh I know (thanks for monotone btw), I'm just taking stock of the huge pile of things I have left to do, there are only so many things one can do in a day. Though not supporting windows yet, I do go out of my way to create abstractions to plan for later support. 110
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 02/12/2024Windows is much more painful, especially for a VCS. IO APIs are slow and insane, all sorts of quirks... I am more familiar with POSIX, but even then Windows always needs the weird hacks. We're working on better support, but not in our Rust code, as it's a lot of work and nobody's paying for it. 100
Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 17/11/2024Pretty much same, though having stronger programmers to help was/still is a big part of it as well. 020

Raphaël Gomès @alphare.bsky.social · 13/11/2024I love the somewhat recent trend in software engineering of realizing that performance actually matters and that computers are so much faster than we think. The heaps of Python code I have to deal with are sometimes a bit demoralizing, but it's at least a valuable challenge. One day it'll be good. 020
