Super cool! Maybe it would be helpful if they made a version at 10x or something (and then you can even make it 2x of that if you want)

Listening to the AV hearing. @cmcharlesallen.bsky.social is questioning the Tesla rep who said that their cars may speed if "for safety" but it sounds like she's saying if it's going much slower than other drivers, all speeding, it may speed then "for safety." Allen doesn't like that (neither do I)

Just got an email from my green energy supplier that a DC Council budget proposal would "effectively eliminate the ability for District residents to choose an alternative electricity supplier." I can't easily find actual facts about what this is. Anyone know? Why is it a budget matter?

New: @janeese4dc.bsky.social just released an internal poll showing her up by 14 in the mayoral race: her lead stays at 12 even when they run a RCV simulation. This is quite the change from the public poll of the race, but I will say I’ve heard rumors of private polls with similar results.

Also turned out this ONE driver was causing most of the traffic just by being stopped here.

David Alpert @alpert.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
I could have taken the bus or (more circuitously) Metro. There’s no incentive to use the bus when it’s stuck in traffic as much as anyone else.

David Alpert @alpert.bsky.social · 19/05/2026
I was driving up 16th yesterday to Columbia Heights. These buses were stuck in major traffic. We need to manage the road so the buses are always gliding through reliably and quickly.

They now have said they will post 1st round votes only, not run the tabulations of later rounds. So the DC mayor’s race might be callable if it’s not super close. Races like Ward 1 or at large maybe less likely.

Has there been a good explanation of why DC Board of Elections can’t compute RCV results when the mail in ballots aren’t all in yet? I mean with classic voting, you get results but if it’s close it could change later. Why isn’t that the case with RCV also? Or is it?

This 1988 ad set off a generation of racialized fear-based crime discourse in our politics. It's been called "the 1.0 version of Trump’s relentless tweets and comments about African-Americans." And last week, DC got its own fearmongering mailer from a McDuffie-affiliated PAC.

Incredible. DOJ, in court, tells Judge Reyes "no closure notice has been issued" for the East Potomac golf course. Moments later the judge is handed a note saying that closure signs are on parts of the golf course today. There's a reason the presumption of regularity is gone.

I don't know all the reasons DDOT does what it does and maybe it has a point, but I'd like to see DDOT more willing to try to do quick things for WMATA and just say improving buses is a priority. Let's just make the default "yes" for WMATA ideas.

Yes, I agree. I've been told that forum question was very confusingly worded and so we probably shouldn't take too much from this - but I'd love someone to ask a clearer question at an upcoming forum so the candidates (after having time to reflect on this one) can give more thought-through answers.

People who now prioritize more aggressive policing and such things can disagree with left candidates, but the urbanist movement made a pretty deliberate effort to bring the big business skeptical left into the coalition and it‘s worked.

I guess the at large Dem candidates, who aren’t housing experts, all waffled a lot at that Ward 3 forum, but activists on left and right are pretty solidly pro housing and that wasn’t the case 10 years go.

David Alpert @alpert.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
I’d also note for some perspective how marginal the left-NIMBY faction is in this race. There are still left NIMBY activists suing things and getting some philanthropy and appealing to old homeowners, but don’t have a mayoral champion. This is not accidental.
