if and when the last person stops getting paid to write code in san francisco, i hope a decade later a band comes back to the open-plan offices to record an album about the end of what was. www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZHo...

wait thats not nessesarily true. rustdoc always puts the versioned type at the top-level of the file, but other people might want a file full of many different versions of rustdoc-json output, and this is more annoying than it could be.
000
Alona @alona.page · 27/09/2026
whereas rustdoc consumers need to handle versioning themselves (rather than as part of a Deserialize impl) but that’s mostly fine because the versioned thing is always top-level.

Alona @alona.page · 27/09/2026
oh hmm wow with the oxide way the version handling can be done nicely by serde as an enum (so the versioned thing doesn’t need to be top-level).

wait i forgot “for rustdoc-json” in the above post, making it almost totally unreadable 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ rustdoc-json does the latter, which works for it because the format knows it’s versioned, rather that that being separate.

ooh, interesting read, thanks! i’m idly wondering if having {“version”: <n>, data: { <…> }}, would be better in principle than {“version”: <n>, <…>}. (in practice the current scheme works Well Enough (tm) and to change it now would be fairly disruptive)

I wholly and un-ironically believe that versioning ought to make up a significant fraction of any formal training in computers. Multiple full year courses in your degree. And there should be a set of journals and conferences on it, endowed chairs, advanced research institutes, the whole nine yards.

Anime girl holding two bottles of JJ Vodka (a real thing!), wearing a toronto blue jays baseball cap. There's a Jay (the bird) perched on top of each bottle of vodka. She's stood infront of the east river in new york, with the river and then the manhattan skyline visible behind.

mmm yeah makes sense. i should write about how cargo exists in this duality between being totally amazing for me coming from systems like pip or cmake+apt-get, while also being wildly disappointing for build-system sickos (complementry) who need solutions to problems i hadn’t even imagined

the principled solution is to do this in the regex library, rather than the needing to transform the regex. Rust’s ’regex’, go’s ‘regexp’ and RE2 for c++ all do this. swtch.com/~rsc/regexp/...

i should admit i was wrong about rustdoc perf when Predrag asked me about it. i thought it was dominated by rustc-proper and there wasn’t much time to be saved in rustdoc code. that’s what i get for not profiling, and going on memories/vibes

“i want slower compilers with worse diagnostics made by people who are paid (at all) to work on less features“ wait this is just golang welp (other than being less slow). more seriously, yeah totally, it’s not great how unpaid uni students hold up half the rust project. (i was one, before i left!

so spotting/fixing this requires expertise that few people have , and most of them are working on rustdoc in nights and weekends. (this is improving, that to RFMF and RustNL and Hexcat)
