infuriating(but probably inconsequential) bad rustc/llvm codegen: Using an error message in an `assert!` means a function now needs to setup a stack and write to memory in the fast-path
#[unsafe(no_mangle)]
fn good_message(a: u8) -> u8 {
    assert!(a <= 0xf, "value {a} is too large");

god, if you want to get mega-caring about typography, HTML really isn't sufficient is it. i want the stems in m and l to line up (which they almost do, by sheer coincidence), and also the stems in p and n to
the text "mp" over the text "lan".

Reload is the GCC equivalent of Satan. See [gccsource:reload.c], [gccsource:reload1.c], and [gccsource:reload.h] if you have a brave soul. (You'll probably also wind up looking at [gccsource:local-alloc.c] and [gccsource:global.c], the register allocator proper.)

What does reload do?

Good question. The what is still understandable. Don't ask about the how.

Reload does everything, and probably no one exactly knows how much that is. But to give you some idea:

i’ve seen speculation that it’s to do with a massive increase in traffic due to pushes of LLM generated code;
Kyle Daigle @kdaigle:

Yup, platform activity is surging. There were 1 billion commits in 2025.
Now, it's 275 million per week, on pace for 14 billion this year if growth remains linear (spoiler: it won't.)
GitHub Actions has grown from 500M minutes/week in 2023 to 1B minutes/week in 2025, and now 2.1B minutes so far this week.
So we're pushing incredibly hard on more CPUs, scaling services, and strengthening GitHub's core features.
And as a fine purveyor of hand-crafted shit code for many years, I'm not gonna weigh in on that.

Quote Tweeing:

@ThePrimeagen

I would like to make my apologies for defending M$, but I must from time to time.
I have to put respect on github for handling the amount of shit code that has been added over the last 3 months....

there’s a thesis to be written here about AI and the need for art to appear that there was effort and intention put into it (and what’s left behind once those are removed) github.com/anthropics/s...
• Emphasize craftsmanship
REPEATEDLY: The philosophy
MUST stress multiple times that the final algorithm should appear as though it took countless hours to develop, was refined with care, and comes from someone at the absolute top of their field. This framing is essential - repeat phrases like "meticulously crafted algorithm," "the product of deep computational expertise,"
"painstaking optimization,"
"master-level implementation."

• EXPERT CRAFTSMANSHIP:
Repeatedly emphasize the final algorithm must feel meticulously crafted, refined through countless iterations, the product of deep expertise by someone at the absolute top of their field in computational aestheticsCRAFTSMANSHIP
REQUIREMENTS
CRITICAL: To achieve mastery, create algorithms that feel like they emerged through countless iterations by a master generative artist. Tune every parameter carefully. Ensure every pattern emerges with purpose. This is NOT random noise
- this is CONTROLLED CHAOS refined through deep expertise.

www.java.com/en/download/...
Why is Java 8 recommended?

Java.com is for end users who need Java for running applications on desktops and laptops. Java 8 integrates with your operating system to run separately installed Java applications. If you were asked to install Java to run a desktop application, it’s most likely you need Java 8.

Developers are encouraged to download the Java Development Kit from OTN downloads or Oracle OpenJDK downloads from jdk.java.net depending on their needs.

Oracle customers with access to My Oracle Support or Oracle Software Delivery Cloud should consider downloading through those services.

www.gov.uk/guidance/sty... @predr.ag the UK government has an official position that breaking changes are not broadly understood.
breaking changes

‘Breaking changes’ are changes to one part of your software system that may cause other parts to fail. Do not use this term without explaining it - user research shows not all technologists immediately understand what it means.

"It's true of me that I just don't enjoy interacting with agency PR people that much," Newton says. He calls Zitron's recent turn to commentary "a new gimmick for himself-Al hater number one" and says Zitron has a "one-sided beef" with him. (Zitron says it's a
"critique.") He compares Zitron's prolix style to "some cross between the Always Sunny meme of Charlie with the murder board] and then a prisoner smearing shit on the walls to make a point." Newton went on: "I think Ed has actually flown too close to the sun now, because he's built this pedestal for himself, and he's climbed on top, and he's posing for glossy portraits in the Financial Times magazine and WIRED, wearing aviators like the fucking Temu Kara Swisher."

Reddit post on r/london

Is it just me, or is London becoming more and more?

I've been a Londoner for years, and don't get me wrong, London has always been. But it seems to me that in recent years (maybe since covid?) London is becoming more and more. The other day, something happened. Yet another proof that London is and I'm starting to get tired of it.

Is it time to move? What do you think?

rustdoc-types now includes a proper changelog, with artisanal hand-written release notes. I'd appreciate feedback, as it's my first time doing this: github.com/aDotInTheVoi...
v0.24.0 - 2023-12-23

Breaking Change: Trait now includes the is_object_safe field. (rust#119246)

Internal Improvement: The scripts to generate the changelog have been revamped to allow hand-written information in the changelog, and to make the release process easier.

Needed to use `-singlestep`, which is a now deprecated, but is the only option available on the old version I have. Interestingly, it makes it ~15x slower, but does let me demonstrate that this optimization has an effect on some configurations. Thanks

that is extremely ugly as the source/target language has no nice features, so the codegen ends up as print statements interspersed with walking the AST (which also holds the result of typecheck) This is what the codegen for ifs currently looks like; i don't want to rewrite it ever
string Cg_if_(pair(int, pair) self, pair(int, pair) cond, pair(pair, pair)[] when, pair(pair, pair)[] unless) is
    string _ = call Cg_expr(self, cond);
    int when_top = call Cg_new_label(self);
    int end_label = call Cg_new_label(self);
    println " pop {r4}";
    println " cmp r4, #0";
    print " bne .L_";
    println when_top;
    _ = call Cg_stats(self, unless);
    print " b .L_";
    println end_label;
    print ".L_";
    print when_top;
    println ':';
    _ = call Cg_stats(self, when);
