Frustrated by economic conditions at home, there's been a slow trickle of U.S. soybean farmers moving to Brazil in the hope of striking it rich. Offrange's Sana Khan takes a look at the complicated legacy of Soylandia: ambrook.com/offrange/boo...

Really pleased to see another review of "Welcome to Soylandia!"out. Thanks to Elena-Daniela Ana for the thoughtful engagement with my work! www.tandfonline.com/doi/figure/1...
A screenshot of the first paragraph of a book review, reading:

"Welcome to Soylandia provides a rich ethnographic account of US farmers who moved to the Brazilian Cerrado in the early 2000s amid the rapid expansion of soybean production. Based on two years of fieldwork conducted between 2012 and 2014, the book explores the changes to land, labour, and landscapes in ‘Soylandia’ that this movement has brought about. Although he does not clarify the origin of the term, Ofstehage defines the Soylandia approach as a socio-economic and ecological farming system favouring capital-intensive over labour-intensive agriculture, relying on no-till farming, agrochemicals and GMOs, and promoting ‘simplicity over complexity, consistency and sameness over diversity, control over wonder, short-term profit and action over long-term investment and patience’ (p. 16). The region’s capital, the town of Luís Eduardo Magalhães, was built by and for the soy agribusiness and is vividly described throughout the book as the embodiment of ‘flexible farming and a dream called Soylandia’ (p. 4)."
