#OnThisDay, 4/5/1880: As a result of the prevalence of the Common Itch, the surveryor reported on the number of Common Lodging Houses. Only Patrick Ryan's, in Crown Inn Yard, was registered. The Crown Inn Yard, with the exception of Stamp's Yard and the Union Court, was the worst in Alnwick.

#OnThisDay 9 April 1775 death of Joseph Turnbull (c.1725 – 1775). Player of the Northumbrian smallpipes and first appointed Piper to the Countess of Northumberland. Later ran the Angel Inn and became Alnwick postmaster.

On this day: 24 Feb 1716 execution for treason of 3rd Earl of Derwentwater. His estates were forfeited to the Crown, then given to Greenwich Hospital, which sold Derwentwater House to the Percy family. They replaced it by the Commissioner's House which became the Duchess’s School in 1888.

On this day: 19 Feb 1828 - Shrove Tuesday football match is played on the pastures for the first time. The Alnwick Shrovetide Football Match was first recorded in 1762 and had been played in the streets of the town, until banned by the improvement act of 1821.

On this day 13 Feb 1871: George Davison loses control of a horse and phaeton on Clayport Bank. Clayport Low Pant (a.k.a. Tower Lane Pant) is struck, and the cap falls off killing four-year-old Mary Anne Murphy. A replacement pant (pictured) was destroyed in 1948 by a runaway bus whose brakes failed.
