The ending is very abrupt and left me unsure what to make of it. Then there's a 20-minute after credits sequence that is quite good and reminds you how excellent the 1st half was. It's hard to know how to rate this movie. The 1st half was 10/10. The 2nd, maybe 6/10. I wanted a better ending. (4/4)

Showing the monster on screen was also a bad idea. Clark's painting on the wall showed what it was, and that was enough to drive home the metaphor while still keeping it terrifying and enigmatic. Showing it on screen drains the terror and enigma out of it and makes it seem kind of silly. (3/4)

The other dimension is a metaphor for how the characters feel psychologically trapped. In the 1st half, that metaphor is subtle and helps create an atmosphere of dread. But the 2nd half moves it out of subtlety and loses the atmosphere. When Clark goes off the deep end, so does the film. (2/4)

Yep. I posted a few months ago about the racist feedback I've gotten from editors. I even made it into a graphic because 288 characters wasn't enough.

Dear White editors,
When responding to submissions from Indigenous authors, DO NOT
- suggest their culture is primitive or express surprise their culture still exists
- whitesplain their culture to them and get it all wrong
- whitesplain to them laws meant to protect their community when those laws exist in name only, are never enforced, and are routinely broken
- ask that they whitewash their story to remove a conflict you believe is unrealistic when it is actually something Indigenous communities experience all the time.
All of these things are racist, whether you intend for them to be or not. Unintentional racism is still racism and is, perhaps, more dangerous than conscious racism. You are publishers who claim to want BIPOC stories and BIPOC voices, yet this is how you respond when you receive them. It's clear what you really want are stories that fit your preconceived notions of what our communities and cultures are like. You don't want our real experiences or perspectives. Please stop acting like you are champions of diversity and a safe space for BIPOC people while trying to smother our voices.

Here, the mom and pop owned restaurants use those box containers. It's only the chain restaurants that have plastic takeout containers instead. The mom and pop restaurants have better food, so we don't bother going to the chains.

Here's the rest of it. What did she think would happen taking a pro-IP theft stance and then saying Canada's been poisoning Indigenous people for years and no one cares? Um, those of us who are Indigenous definitely care and have been fighting it from the beginning. Good riddance.

I want to highlight this part of her rant because it's incredibly dismissive of Indigenous communities' centuries-long fight against environmental racism. While nothing in her article (if I can call it that) demonstrates mature, acceptable behavior, this part is the most egregious.

Yes, we know AI is using up resources. So does driving a car or a plane. So does building a new home. So do a lot of things. Humans have always used up Earth’s resources and usually not nicely. There are reservations and other Indigenous communities in Canada that have never had clean water and have been ravaged by pipeline construction. But somehow that’s been okay for the past fifty years or a hundred years, and very few people scream about that. But suddenly, AI is the enemy, not everything else we’ve been doing all along.

Suddenly YOUR water might not be so clean, so now it’s a Big Deal.

Random thought: The wildest thing I saw when people came to the U.S. for the World Cup was the way they would walk up to cops and ask for directions or help with something. They had no fear at all. It makes me think other countries are paradises where approaching a cop would never get you killed.
