in our brains to redirect from the old, traumatized, addicted thinking ones. We need to build new dopamine sources, examine our thinking, and so much more - and we need to do it in community with one another. It's a disease, go get help. Unless you're an actual hermit, you didn't recover alone.

Sober recovery is not a character war, it's not a willpower war (though some willpower is involved), it's not a war of self…it's a neurological one where we have to do the hard, sometimes boring work of community, structure, skill building, radical honesty and acceptance, and creating new pathways

things can begin to change. Why do you think private pay programs offer 90+ days of residential followed by step down care? Because it has a *much* higher success rate! nida.nih.gov/sites/defaul... Harm reduction has been simplified to a campaign slogan instead of actual harm reduction.

treatment is underfunded, gate kept by insurance companies, and tries to be a one-size-fits-all approach. When you only treat people for 28 days and then put them back where they came from with no resources, of course it fails! When you treat people like human beings and provide holistic service,

Recovery isn't the absence of substance use. It's the reconstruction of a self. And that reconstruction works differently when the community offering to help you rebuild wasn't built with you in mind. Recovery Curriculum 301b is live at atthemargins.org/recovery-cur... Please read and share!

The science on why AA works is actually pretty clear: it restructures your social network. Who you spend time with changes. That changes everything. But in rural areas, there's often only one meeting a week, in a church basement. In English. New piece in the Recovery Curriculum: atthemargins.org

Christmas cookie success! Two Italian Christmas cookies with white icing and red, white, and green sprinkles on a baking rack. A white plate with red Christmas theme snowflakes and such designs holding a plethora of Christmas snack goodies like Italian Christmas cookies, two different topped butter toffees, and peanut butter blossom cookies.

Peanut butter blossom cookies: peanuts butter cookies rolled in sugar, topped with a Hershey chocolate kiss. Theoretically, butter toffee topped with semi-sweet chocolate and an experimental quarter of the pan with saltines crushed on top. 🤞

Where I can reasonably apply is a very short list. Then the other considerations come into play - so few TT positions, the market is a mess, little preparation, less guidance, etc. I ask current advisors, and while sympathetic, they have no real advice. Maybe there just isn't any to give.

Not only are mentors of color doing most of the work of mentoring, but most of our programs aren't talking to marginalized candidates about the realities of their future experiences. I'm trans and multiracial - barely making it in the environment I'm in now…my prospects are SLIM in academia.
