p.s.: there is now a second livestream about the ramping up but it looks like this, so i won't post through it great 1980s office vibe tho
Shot of an office interior, on the back wall we see brown cabinets, on the left brown cabinets but also some shelves with rows of thick binders, in the foreground we see six blokes, one of whom is the prime minister, standing around a desk with a computer screen on it, the only thing that gives it away that we're not in the late 80s, cos it isn't CRT.

They're all staring at the wall to the right, where out of shot, there's a display grid that shows the current status of the whole plant.

Another angle of the turbine hall, in the foreground we see two people in ordinary street clothes and a hard hat (the left one is one of the head honchos of the nuclear power station, on the right the prime minister), but behind them is a rack of gauges, with red stopcocks above and below.

Shot of the wall of the turbine hall with a row of pipes running mostly vertically, although some take a horizontal turn. From the perspective it looks like even the smallest is more than a foot across. The largest you could probably walk through.

turns out bearded guy is indeed in charge of monitoring everything to hit the emergency shutdown of the turbine should anything look even slightly off presumably he is also on santa duty at the company christmas do for the workers' kids
The bearded guy from earlier on, now we can see his moustache as well, and to his left (the picture's right) some plumbing and a high-pressure end plate of something or other, it's a metal disk with 12 screws around its perimeter.

according to this display we're up to 600 rpm (i'm watching this on replay but i won't spoiler the end for you) note the plate on the left with some presumably quite important text in russian, judging from the fact it begins with a single word followed by an exclamation mark
More gigantic industrial machinery with a little seven segment display in the middle and the aforementioned plaque with what I presume are safety instructions in Russian.

these are the steam condensers underneath the turbine
Two green contraptions on the floor below, they must be the size of a bus each, really they're just large pipes that carry the used steam and idk compress and cool it until it becomes water again?

I'm a software engineer, this is way out of my comfort zone.

Peter Ellis @almostconverge.kozterulethasznalatienge.day · 22/08/2026
fuck me, these are the electric "wires" that the turbine feeds it's difficult to tell the scale but they must be about 2 metres across
Three massive pipes leading from somewhere beneath the camera to the wall across. They are enormous and each of them has a coloured ring around it (red, yellow and green), presumably to identify which phase is which.

Makes sense, you absolutely do not want to cross these wires.

i bet you didn't think the operation was this high-tech
Another mechanic in a blue overall and a blue hard hat is inspecting the spinning end of the turbine, protruding from the housing. He's a slightly portly man intently checking something out on the axle with a pen-sized LED torch.

The turbine itself is absolutely monstrous, at least 4 metres in diameter (don't know how long, we see it end on, but i reckon at least 20 metres) and is also blue. The part that is beyond the housing is surrounded by a guardrail that of course is highlighted in black and yellow paint.

this is exactly the kind of guy i was hoping to be in charge of the operation we're in good hands
Screenshot from the livestream video mentioned above, showing a shitton of plumbing, and two guys in t-shirts and hard hats talking to someone on a handheld radio.

A photograph of tonight's national day celebrations in Budapest: in the middle we see the Danube with both banks lit up, with the Chain Bridge bathing in light across it, above it the floating head of what I presume is one of our steppe ancestors (made of LED drones) and in the background a lightning strike in probably the Pilis Mountains (not part of the celebrations but extra cool)

It makes you want to grab your bow, hop on your horse, and start shooting arrows backwards.

still the best "tsa do not like funnies" story

When Nobel laureate Brian Schmidt was asked at airport security if anyone had given him an item to carry on board, he had confess that someone had: the King of Sweden.

The astrophysicist, who won the Nobel in 2011, was stopped when his Prize medal made from $10,000 (£6,200) of gold caught the attention of staff from the US Transport Security Administration, whose agents are not known for their sense of humour.

Now living in Australia, Mr Schmidt had been on his way back from visiting family in Fargo, North Dakota, when the agents saw a dark mass in his bag as it passed through an airport scanner.

Speaking at a conference in New York last month, in remarks reported on Friday by the blog Scientific America, he described what happened next: “They’re like, ‘Sir, there’s something in your bag.’ I said, ‘Yes, I think it’s this box.’

"They said, ‘What’s in the box?’ I said, ‘a large gold medal,’ as one does.

“So they opened it up and they said, ‘What’s it made out of?’ I said, ‘gold.’ And they’re like, ‘Uhhhh. Who gave this to you?’ ‘The King of Sweden.’ ‘Why did he give this to you?’ ‘Because I helped discover the expansion rate of the universe was accelerating.’

“At which point, they were beginning to lose their sense of humour. I explained to them it was a Nobel Prize, and their main question was, ‘Why were you in Fargo?’”

Mr Schmidt, who had been to Fargo to visit his grandmother, said the staff were particularly suspicious as the gold in the medal gave it a somewhat unusual profile under the airport X-ray machine.

"It weighs a half a pound, and it’s made of gold... so it absorbs all the X-rays – it’s completely black. And they had never seen anything completely black.”

Photo of two hopelessly drunk blokes in a run-down garden somewhere in Eastern Europe, it could be anywhere really.

One is sitting on a bench and is slumped forward onto a rickety table that also has some dangerous-looking plastic bottles on it, hinting at home-distilled spirits having been drunk.

The other is sitting on a broken chair that is missing its back, well, he probably was sitting on it at some point but now it's only his lower half that is sitting on it, the rest of him fell out of the chair backwards, bending his back in an impressive, almost yoga-like angle, with his head nestled on the ground near the trunk of a tree.

He's wearing blue jeans and a black leather jacket, not that this matters all that much at this point.

and you'd think as a respectable modern engineering company they'd gently gloss over the founder's crackpot theories (other things they didn't need to because luckily hanns himself died in 1931, before the nazis came to power) but no in the incredibly detailed* chronicle they published they write:
An excerpt from the company chronicle:

Hanns Hörbiger

Johann Evangelist “Hanns” Hörbiger was born on November 29, 1860, in Atzgers dorf near Vienna. After completing an apprenticeship as a blacksmith and mechanic and studying at the School of Construction and Mechanical Engineering in Vienna, he began his professional career as a technical draftsman and designer.

In 1895, he laid the foundation for HOERBIGER as a company with his in
vention of the steel plate valve. In 1900, he and Friedrich Wilhelm Rogler founded the engineering firm “Hörbiger & Rogler” in Budapest, which later moved to Vienna.

Hörbiger gained international renown for his technical inventions, particularly in the field of valve technology. In 1906, he patented the second generation HOERBIGER plate valve, which is still considered the
standard today and formed the basis for the company’s later success.

From 1925 onwards, he increasingly withdrew from practical engineering work and devoted himself to his passion for astronomy.

From 1894 onwards, he developed the pseudo-scientific world ice theory, also known as glacial cosmogony. Hanns Hörbiger died on
October 11, 1931, in Mauer near Vienna.
