Thinking about how much of character design boils down to "all these attributes are all normal familiar things, just not in combination, in this time period, or in this location"

Oil burns in 1834 the same way it burns in 2034, show me a tesla robot that can operate 50 years from now.

They were obssessed with lineage, land, gold, metal, and oil because those were things that would still be useful 1000 years from now. Sam Altman doesn't believe in a world beyond his death and fundamentally thinks most other humans shouldn't exist. It's not ego, it's religion.

Gilded age capitalists built mines, stone buildings, monuments, roads/railroads, and got their names on maps because they looked at 6000 years of human history and went "Those are the things that actually last and matter so I will steal them". Every nvidia GPU will be in a landfill within a decade.

The 'AI death cult' allegations make a lot more sense if you think about how Sam Altman would rather die a martyr in a world where 99% of the population has died in some catastrophe, while an actual capitalist would be like "are you fucking mad then how would the robots build my pyramids?!!"

Almond @almondsquirrel.bsky.social · 8h
A handy mental picture is that gilded age capitalists dreamed of vast empires of land, gold, oil, population, and monuments that would last millenia. Modern day tech CEOs dream of being immortal sephiroth flying through the cosmos alone using the power of a dead planet as his vessel.

You can tell if someone is a technofeudalist fascist or just a run-of-the-mill capitalist if you offer them slaves. The fascist will refuse them because they don't like the idea of being around lesser humans that might trigger an empathy response. The capitalist will immediately put them to work.

Almond @almondsquirrel.bsky.social · 8h
Raw unfiltered capitalism doesn't actually prefer a white collar service economy, it wants company town child slave labor for pyramid-building and generational resource dynasties. Today's billionaires waste precious resources on AI and robotics instead because they actually want people to die off.

Dario's basilisk: you have to treat LLMs as sentient and conscious today on the off chance they usher in a government fascist enough to retroactively punish anyone who didn't contribute to its creation.

Like, yeah, capitalism causes all sorts of social ills but what America has right now (few/no free markets, inefficient wealth extraction, bad labor productivity, inability to create capital resources) is something weirder, worse, darker, and far more techno feudal than capitalist.

The US has actually been very bad at capitalism (state protections for the owners of the means of production) for a few decades now and it mostly comes down to protecting financialization (wealth parking, monopolization and debt financing) over actual capital accumulation.

there was a bit of drama at the end because security wouldn’t let people leave the theater during the Q & A. But when the would-be exiters made a scene, they opened the doors. I imagine the heavy security had something to do with Gibney (the director) and St. Clair (Elon’s ex) being there.

Ossoff is definitely not listening to Yglesias/Klein/PodSave reactionary centrist crowd, he does not think his marginal voter is a white-supremacist, and that is what makes him such an attractive candidate to the vast majority of US who are not white-supremacists.

Oh yeah, 100%. The 40-60 year olds who were making Austin Powers and the Scooby Doo movie and That 70s Show were definitely trying to capture their childhood nostalgia. Except now those aesthetics are more known by that era than by the original era they were copying.

Case in point I bet most zoomers would assume this TV is from 1998-2002 because of how many millenium era cartoons and movies were just nostalgic for the late 60s

I guess this is like all those 90s-2000s Parody films that were trying to parody late 50s/early 60s aesthetics but are now just a weird quirk of their own because the average person doesn't have living memory of what media 50 years ago was like.

There is a bigger gap of time between today and Young Frankenstein than Young Frankenstein and the 1930s-1940s era of film that it was trying to be a nostalgic parody of.

Okay, so having finished the night springs DLC I can sufficiently say this is some of the most cleverly written enjoyable things I have ever experienced in a video game, and the combat doesn't even hold it back like the base game. It really makes me feel like Alan Wake 2 was -holding back-.
