Theth, Albania. A town where the mountain guiding industry has been monopolised by the local dogs. They just latch on to anybody they see in hiking gear to go on walkies, and they know all the trails like the back of their paw.

Back home. The towing company called to say they'd overcharged me and sent me a 70€ refund. Croatia's nice like that. I usually get a breakdown that requires unexpected stops once every 6 months. So hopefully I've got it out of the way early this time. On to Albania. 🇦🇱

Time for an impromptu holiday in Split. As I was driving on the motorway in the rain I started to think "is it me or are my window wipers getting slower?" The nearest garage was 45km away and I tried to limp Abbie there. But all the electrics died, followed shortly after by the engine.

Good news, I made it down the death drive. Abbie was a star, even with a whimpering fool behind the wheel. In honour of our survival, the next episode will be on the history of Ljulbijana. From Jason and Medea to the UK Garage night I'm going to later. Until then, happy new year. No Pasaran!

It's a shame I can't stay a little longer. Once the clouds come back they'll bring a dumping of snow that makes the whole mountaintop great for snowshoeing. But I had to head back. Firstly to do the death drive from the campsite to the main road. Then to my park up in Ljubljana for NYE.

It seems like it would have been a very peaceful life. Although you would have to develop a high tolerance to boredom and hardship. Plus a somewhat liberal attitude to cousin marriage I imagine. The original huts were burned in WW2. The ones there now are mostly holiday homes and ski chalets.

Velika Planina is a flat topped mountain with a few hundred acres of open land at the top. Historically there were three villages of huts that looked similar to the ones there today. The place was effectively an island, given that just getting to the valley floor and back was a 6 hour round walk.

I took the cable car and chair lift up to Velika Plania today. You can hike up there in about 3 hours. But I wanted to get to Ljubljana for New Years Eve. So I gave the legs a rest.

A wander back down the valley, the biggest Schnitzel I've ever seen and a beer while watching the Croatian Chase with Miche who runs the site. I can definitely recommend staying a few days here during quiet season. Apparently it gets a bit hectic in summer. Site: maps.app.goo.gl/haahwz2bypHV...

On the advice of the woman who runs the campsite, I walked up Kamniško Sedlo. Which is a lower spot (1,900m) in the mountains looking over Austria. The views are much better from there than Rzenik, which was my original plan. Blue skies and not a breath of wind. Perfect hiking weather.

Made it to Slovenia and parked up in Kamniška. The road up to the campsite was quite a steep dirt track. But I've been assured it'll be safe for me to get down. I suppose I'll either get back down to the valley slowly, or very very quickly. But before that, I'll be hiking up Rzenik tomorrow
