Yeah, the only new information is credited to one (1) "industry insider" in two paragraphs, including the conclusion. Everything else is links to earlier and already known stories like 60 Minutes resignations and Tony Dokupil being ratings poison. Insider got themselves a nice headline, though.

One nice lady at a nice party told me we needed to reach "Gen Z" in "the metaverse." She had the cash to run every student paper until the heat death of the universe. Again, what we are talking about is philanthropically miniscule. We could do this AND piss away a pallet on consultants' reports.

Source: 30 years of fundraising for my college paper. During which time I have heard shit you would not believe from administration flunkies, fellow alums, "professional" journalists and the general audience. Most of it variations of "nobody cares."

Every single year every single one of them produces a generation of journalists who have exactly the qualities we scream online all day that we want: Immune to bullshit, fearless in inquiry, and stubborn as hell. Every year a dozen or so shut down for lack of funds.

I cannot overstate how many of them are just totally on their own. They pay peanuts if they pay at all and kids are showing up there between school AND jobs to do a whole other full-time job on the regular because they give that much of a damn.

Most of them run on shoestring budgets or are dependent on the whims of university administrations or student governments, the former cowardly at the best of times. There never was any corporate money, even in the good times, and there was never any venture capital (thank God, in retrospect).

Since we're all talking about student media, let's talk about what they really need. Online kudos are great. Recognition from the so-called pros who use them as tip sheets is also great, if rarer than it should be. But they need money.
