my guess is its for nostalgia/pop culture & for those that didn’t go to one (some folks get real uptight seeing folks rep their hbcu if they didn’t attend it), It’s a way for all of US (read black) to be connected even if we weren’t able to attend one for whatever reasons.

I live near two wedding venues. It's football season. The big school is away, so I can go down there. The other is at home so I "stay from over there" too. But, see the people plan their weddings around these schedules. So it still takes me seven.5 traffic minutes to get out of the subdivision.
