I read a historian once saying they arose as mutual support networks in times when the state wasnt doing that. And particularly so in the US because the inability of the state to do universal things due to racial politics, but no idea if that holds up

Hacker news comment:

jboggan 12 hours ago | root | parent | prev | next [-] I went back to that Fable chat and showed it this new preprint. It coded up the new constructive algorithm and ran it against the existing test suite, that looks good at least.
It has been super helpful in delineating where the crucial concept came from. The proof is rather simple as graph theory proofs go, but it does seem to use some constructions that would only seem obvious if you had serious physics experience with partition function and calculating energy states that cancel out. *It's not a wholly alien bolt from the heavens, but I can also see how there hasn't been a human being with the broad theoretical physics knowledge combined with the deep graph theory experience in planar graphs to come up with this idea.* (emphasis mine) I don't know, I'm looking for precedents of this formulation and some old papers of Penrose counting the number of edge colorings of this same graph type are coming up, the line of argument at least rhymes.
But I agree with the thought that this sort of progress should not be siloed inside those companies. I propose a tax so that every slop cannon AI video pays for another hour of compute time for advancing mathematics.

Pretty fun, having more "suits" but many cards being multiple changes the change in interesting ways. Some of the other mappings are a bit unintuitive but overall works

Trust is also an important part of it. Etymology of secretary is the one who keeps (a gentleman's) secrets. It was common for your PA to book rooms for an affair etc. For the relationship to work you need to be able to fully trust them with all relevant information, which a meta agent is not

Yeah if there's one thing you can't accuse Yud of it's thinking about the issue. It's just buried in his several thousand blog posts. IIRC his position wrt current AI is that it's easier to create something powerful enough to destroy us without it being a person, so that's more urgent

For most of human history if you had a child it was a coin flip chance that they'd die before growing up. Untold millions of parents suffered pain we can't imagine. So many young lives cut short. Now even the poorest parts of our world are a fraction of that.

It is an important life skill to be able to just dislike or disagree with people without making it a moral statement. And especially to not therefore accuse them of serious crimes.

alkatyn.bsky.social @alkatyn.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
The casually multilingual nature of LLMs is underrated. There's so much stuff that never gets coverage in English language media and isn't worth paying people to translate. Probably an even bigger deal for people in other languages

People often confuse risk tolerance with diminishing marginal returns. E.g. The classic example of a guaranteed $1 million versus a 50/50 chance of $10 million is not really about your appetite for risk but about how each additional dollar is worth less to you in terms of real-life impact.
