NEW PAPER: Sable Shearwaters are long-lived migratory #seabirds that spend much of their lives at sea. Across their life cycle, they experience very different physiological demands. Read the paper (free) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Life‐stage variation in Sable Shearwater (<fi>Ardenna carneipes</fi>) physiology assessed using proteomics
Life-stage transitions in seabirds involve substantial shifts in physiological demands, yet the molecular mechanisms underpinning these changes remain poorly resolved. Here we applied untargeted data....

As it's breeding time for giant petrels on Bird Island, meet the oldest female giant petrel on the island ⬇️ She hatched there in 1989, making her an impressive 36 years old. This season, she decided to build her nest next to the path, where the team greet her every day as they go past 🪶

Last week HRH King Charles III learned about all the amazing research happening at #AdriftLab & the remarkable #birds we’re so lucky to work with. King Charles shares our teams’ passion for environmental #conservation. We’re hoping for a dinner invite soon 😉 #WPY60 @nhm-london.bsky.social

Last week @alixdejersey.bsky.social attended the #AUSoMicS Conference & presented her STUNNING poster on #plastics & #proteomics: it got heaps of great feedback-check it out!👇 #SublethalEffects #seabirds #phdlife @jackauty.bsky.social @seabirdsentinel.bsky.social @thelabandfield.bsky.social

While undertaking fieldwork on #LordHoweIsland this month, the #AdriftLab team completed 21 #cleanups of four beaches. In total, we removed 2943 #plastics weighing 33kg (carried on our bicycles). All debris was sorted & uploaded to Australia’s national database #AMDI @jackauty.bsky.social

All this plastic is making my head spin. I don’t think one can grasp the amount of our own produced junk you can find in sable shearwaters. All the pieces here (60g - 778 pieces) were in one (1!!!) chick. That’s roughly 20% of its body weight. @adriftlab.bsky.social @thelabandfield.bsky.social

Because of the massive increase in #IngestedPlastic this year (number, mass and size of particles) were finding intact items inside our baby #seabirds. This means we’re able to get information on brands…including THIS! ⬇️ #SoyFish #PollutionIsADesignChoice #shearwaters @seabirdsentinel.bsky.social

World-first analysis of seabirds who’ve eaten plastic reveals slow, insidious health impacts
A bird might look and act outwardly healthy – but on the inside, ingested plastics are slowly wreaking havoc.

Proud to share our new @adriftlab.bsky.social paper published in Science Advances! We explored the sub-lethal impacts of plastic ingestion on birds using tools from medical research rarely applied in wildlife conservation. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
