Our first trustee meeting at Shiremoor Adventure Playground for a couple of months, catching up on the summer - August saw almost 14,000 visitors (over 9000 children, plus adults and volunteers), an astonishing average of about 300 children a day. That’s a lot of play!

This seems like a disingenuous claim, including the nurdles not spilt in suggesting that 3/4 of the pellet cargo has been recovered. In fact, around 5 of 17 tonnes has been recovered, about 30%
The amount of pellets being collected has reduced considerably since the incident. Of the 17.92 tonnes of pellets estimated to have entered the River Tyne, 5.14 tonnes had been recovered from the water and beaches as of 23 September. When combined with pellets removed from damaged containers on board BG Orange by the Port before they entered the water, almost three quarters of the original plastic pellet cargo has now been recovered overall.

The hope is that the community efforts, outrage, distress, skills, mobilisation that have accompanied the nurdle spill from the start can develop into a bigger, ambitious, generational plan to make the Tyne clean, and maybe even give the river rights, echoing campaigns from rivers around the world.

There’s still no clearly coordinated response to clear-up with the capacity to act quickly and convincingly when more of the millions of nurdles reappear on our shores. And there’s no long-term plan to deal with the nurdles and all the other pollutants in the river.

Just come back from a meeting to talk about the nurdle spill and longer term plans for a clean Tyne. Lots of commitment in the room to the river, but also a lot of frustration at the continuing slow and low-level response and poor communication from various responsible organisations and companies.

As Jarrow embarks on its hopeful, well-intentioned Pride in Place programme, the geography of the “flows of capital and power” - and their consequences - are surely getting still worse for places like Jarrow.

90 years on, and after repeated waves of area- (now place-) based regeneration, decade after decade, it’s tricky not to see the bigger, more intractable issues related to the flows of capital and power, as Doreen Massey suggested nearly 50 years ago in “In what sense a regional problem?”

One more thing about the Tyneside nurdle crisis is that the clean-up efforts have drawn attention to all the other plastic in our sea. This volunteer’s video shows all the plastics left after sieving out the nurdles; what’s not visible is the tiny tiny microplastics that wash through the nets.
