If there were a personification of perfectionism I would rally to grant it a public execution I found a cute set of October art prompts; AU-Tober! An interesting chance to play with their lore or just throw my OCs in fun situations ^^ Cant guarantee I'll do every day but I'll try a few :)
Image of one OC of mine pinning another to a wall with his foot, a cocky expression on his face. The man being pinned by his shoulder holds malice in his eyes.
Text reads:
AU-Tober - role swap

-rich

-pariah
-broke
-weak?

Digital illustration of a woman in a long, pink dress, sitting on a cut down log while leaning forwards and reaching out for a pink butterfly flying in front of her as she smiles.
Various people can be found walking through a wheat field in the background raising their hands as though calling out for somebody.
The skyline is defined by the form of a castle, a sunset casts the entire image in an orange hue.

4.2. Silhouettes and the boundary between light and shadow are the best areas to clarify texture while keeping details low. You can add the forms of the leaves as shadows in the bushes at the boundary between light and shadow or their silhouettes in the trees and you've got pretty and simple trees!
simple drawing of a snake with it's head in shadow and horns that look like branches with leavessame drawing but with notes
Red: "silhouettes"
Pink: "transition points between light & dark"
Blue: "no detail" (I.e.; you can afford to be quite lazy if you execute this well)

3.1 You used three values for light, mid-tones and shadows each. not a bad idea but it can reasonably be simplified to one or two values of low contrast, as the eyes aren't meant to focus on the area the detail isn't required

2.1. While more realistic on larger scales because the atmosphere causes it, you can lighten the background and darken the foreground to achieve a sense of dimension in the image the inverse can also be achieved through light falloff, so you have options
mountain range, notable the mountains in the foreground are darker and they get lighter as they distance themselves from the cameradark forest lit by a flashlight, notably the forest gets darker as the light fails to reach further away

Alison 🥀 @alisonrosey.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
1.2. So the goral is to unify the values a bit by either darkening the leaves or lightening the branches, you can choose based on the vibe of the image you're trying to go for colors are always relative so it won't look off to have either change their values

1.1. If you use a black or white saturation layer on your drawing you can see that the values are a bit all over the place. The branches having significantly different values from the leaves cause a lot of contrast and would draw the eyes away from the focal point.

little 1h exercise, I wanted to keep the shadows as simple as possible while using mainly lit-up areas to provide form I ended up being a little indecisive about whether to count reflected light so I just made two variants- one with reflected light and one without #art #study #artstudy

heard a good way to get better at simplifying is to give yourself a time limit so I did a few studies where I gave myself 5 mins to do each Main thing I'm seeing is that I tend to stick away from extreme values Might use black and white as a groundwork next time to see how it goes then^^ #artstudy

I could've chosen other leviathans instead but chose not to as some of them lose a lot of their fear-factor once you understand how to outplay them- or learn that they simply aren't a real threat, like the great Jaw. That turquoise ball in the middle? You could fit about two players in there.
Screenshot of the Great Jaw from subnautica 2Interesting PDA note about the great jaw we see in-game

a short post as an explanation can hardly to them justice so I highly recommend reading their PDA entries! they only show up to hunt you when you swim outside of the currently playable map into the deep, open ocean- past a barrier that warns you that you're leaving the early-access area.

another concept i had in-between was drawing miku- since her colors are quite similar to the palette. that ended as a sketch after I realized the palette doesnt enable the warm and cozy vibe I was going for.

I offer the original concept I abandoned a few days ago: In and of itself its not that bad but I realized its flawed from the ground up and I didn't actually enjoy most of what I was doing with it. In part because it only involved fixing those root mistakes.

Determining how to transition between light and dark an easy tell for a skilled artist in my eyes because I am NOT sure I could do that without a clear reference to copy, especially with the sheer amount of options you have, but its an AMAZING skill to have to portray form accurately so-
using alt text as an excuse to yap again i wanted to mention that 'short transitions' are great to convey sharpness, most easily seen when you just have a hard edge, but a short trans. may be better used if you dont want said object to draw attention (contrast, yada yada)

This part is based more on preference so you may prefer the inverse and I'm not stopping you if you do but I have a few reasons as to why I disliked certain parts ;P The wall in the next room; there is a lot more variance in saturation and brightness than before and it looks messy while taking-
100
Alison 🥀 @alisonrosey.bsky.social · 05/05/2026
While the hue changes- I never leave the marked ring. So brightness and- more importantly- saturation - remain incredibly similar throughout. Next to that the base is the already neutral color white- so there's less to fight with color harmony, etc.
color wheel with a small circle indicating saturation- and brightness-variance marked area I mean

First off i think the white wall on the left was the most successful part of the study- nothing stands out too much while the area doesnt look as boring as plain-white anymore. I've got a theory or two on why it went best there:
black-and-white image of the final painting. notably the shading-etc is still cohesive and doesnt look blotchy for the most part

Alison 🥀 @alisonrosey.bsky.social · 05/05/2026
I've got a bit to yap about this study; I'll add the goal in the ALT text of this image and then follow up below with some of my observations 🧵
I had recently seen a few art posts mentioning how you can add intrigue to the more monotone parts of a painting by adding different colors of similar brightness around the area- hence why the quoted study has such a mess of colors

the similar brightness is achieved by creating a black-colored saturation layer on top of all other layers and matching the grey-tones as closely as possible

Take this cat image while I add more notes in the alt text
Right I deluded myself into thinking the lips in your original image were puckered and drew them as such oops.
if it’s just a smile in reality then I’m bothering you with the ‚wrapping around a cylinder’ thing again- even a smile takes the convex shape of a frown when viewed from below.

I was gonna add more info but the more I read this the more it seems so convoluted that it gets confusing so I’ll stick to the simple one above.

Alison 🥀 @alisonrosey.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
well it never hurts to ask ;] I've faced the consequences of giving unwarranted advice before details in alt text again, had to rush a bit mb hope I didn't forget anything and hope it helps a bit good luck soldier o7
yappin' time:
First off i threw a rough skeleton on your drawing to bring some anatomical sense into my tips, it's not perfect but it can explain SOME of the contours here :P (the jaw may be a bit recessed oops)

some basic important shapes/notes:
- the face is turned upward so you can draw most forms wrapping around it from below (ill elaborate a tiny bit later)
- the ear starts where the jawline ends, so you shouldn't extend the jaw beyond that
- the perspective means that things facing away from the camera are shorter than usual, that can include the bridge of the nose and any distance between nose and mouth, while things usually facing down are now facing the camera and are elongated- i.e.: the bottom of the nose, the brow bone, the upper lip, etc.
^ importantly this also applies to the forehead, which you drew quite large.
- the neck muscles to some extent connect to a small, arch-shaped bone located a few inches beneath the tongue before that connects to the jaw with other muscles and skin, hence the little arch shape below the neck (I hope that makes sense i gotta sleep man), which also forms the shadow of the jaw herethese next two doodles are based on rough style choices between anime and semi-realistic, specifically when it comes to jaw/chin shape.
The chin here isn't necessarily elongated, as is usually done in an amine art style.
most notes from the bone-structure image apply here, relevant is also:

- about point 1 from the first image: the eyes are balls in your head and the eyelids wrap around that shape accordingly. here I drew the lower lids turned upwards, as to match the perspective (I really cant go deeper i gotta get to bed man mb)
- I noted the brow bone being more visible, here you can see how far away you can keep the eyebrows while still looking reasonable
- don't look at the nose idk what im doingthis one is based on how you chose to draw the jaw:
an anime style tends to ELONGATE the chin as opposed to flattening it to match the perspective. they get a bit funky wit' it yk.
- this is a bit of a modest chin length for that style but even then it's a lot shorter than the one you drew.
- I believe the elongated chin also serves to avoid drawing the arch-shaped bone I mentioned last image, so it's a safer choice if you aren't sure about the anatomy of the area. I would recommend looking for a 3d model of the 'asaro Head' if you still want to try your hand at it and get an idea of how the area is shaped though!
