A Thanksgiving Message from the Aliso Niguel Democratic Club:

gnore the pilgrim hype. Thanksgiving as a national holiday originated during the Civil War. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving in recognition of the losses of the United States forces, and it has been celebrated annually since. It was only decades later that national Thanksgiving became associated with Plymouth colony in popular memory.

Why is pumpkin pie especially associated with the holiday? In the mythology of abolitionists, pumpkins were grown by the free labor of northern yeoman farmers - they weren’t profitable enough to be grown on slave plantations. Pumpkin pie became so associated with the abolition movement that Southerners refused to eat it in the years before the Civil War, and former confederates refused to celebrate Thanksgiving in the years after.

So, enjoy your Thanksgiving pumpkin pie in the spirit of the liberation of all peoples. Other pies are probably good too, but without the symbolism.
