They could be addressing someone of a senior rank, such as a bishop, or group of bishops

Alison @alisondennison.bsky.social · 2h
Absolutely. Could be formal, could be plural, could be both! All's fair as long as it's properly conjugated

Alison @alisondennison.bsky.social · 3h
Could be formal but don't forget vous also applies when addressing two or more people at once

Still one of the baddest recordings (Minnie the Moocher) and one of the coldest intros (Cab Calloway dancing to St. James Infirmary). Said to be the first known footage of Cab Calloway . . . *imagine* what it must have been like to see Cab layin' this down on screen for the first time in 1932?!! ☠️

One of these is the kooky option, that could get you laughed out of the country club. Another is so frumpy your husband will cheat on you. All the others are fine

Less than 90 years ago and bottom left was how you'd spend all day washing your clothes. I'm weirdly annoyed that the handle/stick for the posser isn't included with the dolly tub set. What are we supposed to do, Littlewoods? Go to the handle shop?

Today at 1.40pm on @talkingpicturestv.bsky.social, Alec Guinness stars in classic Ealing satire The Man in the White Suit. Alexander Mackendrick’s pertinent film about the manufacturing malaise built into the capitalist status quo. 5 out of 5 #TalkingPicturesTV film-authority.com/2025/09/16/t...

If Westminster succeeds in banning 'vertical drinking' etc from Soho, then drinking, revelry and entertainments may be forced south of the river. I hear the Lord Chamberlain's Men have built a fine playhouse in Southwark, where divers pleafant spectacles are prefented

Genuinely had copied that exact sentence in order to paste it once you got down to the jury comments. My favourite ever thing said by the jury, and I fully expect it to enter into my regular lexicon when talking about boyfriends. Plus they're 100% right

There would not be any problem, they could go to the festival and share the tent just as they did before, IF they didn't now both have boyfriends. They need to break up with these men for the sake of the tent

The bit in Guy Montgomery's Guy Mont-Spelling Bee S1E6 where Aaron Chen spins a globe for each question of a round is so funny that I'm currently rewatching it (iPlayer). The accompanying music is part of what makes it. It's just so silly and well done

If she presents a late night chat show she could call it North West Tonight (with Gordon Burns)
Gordon Burns presenting BBC North West Tonight. I remember one Christmas I went home from London and the main headline for an entire week on NW Tonight was a seal in a field. How did it get there? What next for the seal in a field?

Columbo episode review: Last Salute to the Commodore
May 2nd, 1976 looked set to be the end of an era. With Peter Falk out of contract, Last Salute to the Commodore threatened to be Lieutenant Columbo’s swan song. Is it a bon voyage, or is it d…

After the bad taste finally left my system I got back into Columbo, but it's horrible to think that ep is out there, that it might be some people's first experience of the show. They'll watch it and think "*This?!* is the show everyone recommends?!"
120
Alison @alisondennison.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The fact that it's a 70s ep too - the golden era, before it got a bit self indulgent and silly - makes it feel like a betrayal. There's almost a feeling of malice there, like "we know you love this character, so now he's an annoying, creepy dick. Still love him?!"

Alison @alisondennison.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The Columbo ep Last Salute to the Commodore put me off Columbo for over a year. It was like biting into my favourite brand of chocolate bar and it turning out to be a rotting finger covered in faeces
