Interesting experience as a social and family historian- on holiday in Australia and staying in Brisbane on Census Night! Included even as visitors and had to put my ancestral background- English Irish Scottish as separate tick boxes - that’s me! Never done that before @berksfhs.bsky.social

Many years ago my dad went to a derby match in Liverpool when Everton won (many many years ago!). The end some wit was handing out black edged cards about the demise of LFC with the legend “StJohn pray for us”!

Small world- we’re part-time residents ie second home! Had the house 19 years. We try to spend as much time as we can there but have to be in the UK too. Back at the beginning of Sept this year, just got home. Are you melting 🫠 too? Missing the sea here ….

That’s true - and little lowly non-celeb me does the same. Every so often my darling southern husband looks askance at me as the scouse-ism slips through! As they say you can take the girl out of Liverpool/Merseyside but …

Also do you think he was exaggerating the Merseyside intonations to sound as if he was scouse and not Chester? Just a thought …

As a native of the Wirral (now in exile) I hear what you say but to me I hear the Cheshire accent more. Just me perhaps - and I always thought wools came from Warrington.😂I know I’m a plastic 😘

Alison Pedley (Dr when appropriate ) @aliped.bsky.social · 25/02/2026
Sorry but Chester does not sound scouse just as people from the Wirral are not Scouse. He has a Chester/Cheshire accent. I’m not denigrating Scouse but the Wirral is not scouse.

What a selfish mother. I had measles as a4 year old (1961 no vaccine at the time) and I have had tinnitus ever since. As I have got older my hearing has worsened. I got off lightly- measles can carry much worse problems in her children’s future

Very interesting discussion- I started my MA Historical Research in 2009 (age 52) spread it over three years and followed by my PhD achieved in2020. However my university (Roehampton) doesn’t offer such possibilities anymore, such a shame. There’s always U3A of course.

I find the maps fascinating and have used them to add ‘colour’ to some of my case studies. And to trace where my great grandmother was born. Great source of social history.
