Is Poland heading for a jobs crisis? Despite rising unemployment rate, Poland still has one of the lowest rates in Europe, while employment remains close to record highs. In this episode of The Warsaw Wire, labour economist Piotr Lewandowski helps us unpack this paradox.

A recent rise in unemployment in Poland has raised concern. But that headline figure does not tell the whole story, with experts arguing that the Polish labour market is actually in good shape, writes Alicja Ptak.

Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid have shown how fragile - and how vital - access to electricity really is. In The Warsaw Wire, WSJ journalist Louisa Naks explains how Poland’s grid operator PSE is preparing for growing hybrid threats.

Katowice’s shift from heavy industry to tech captures Poland’s economic + energy transition. In the latest episode of The Warsaw Wire, I spoke with FT's Raphael Minder about his story on Katowice. Why he chose the city, and what surprised him during reporting.

Poland now has one of the fastest-growing public debts in the EU, yet it is still well below the EU average. So how concerned should we be? I spoke with Aleksander Kieroński of @PolitykaInsight about debt, deficits, defence spending, and why the cost of debt is the real threat.

Is Poland the black horse of the energy transition? 🇵🇱 Once a coal-heavy laggard, it’s now tripled renewables, launched nuclear & offshore projects, and calls for a pragmatic, people-focused transition. I spoke with 🇵🇱 climate negotiator Katarzyna Wrona ahead of #COP30.

Poland rolls out its deposit-refund system for bottles and cans. Tuesday: “Buy this water! It’s cheaper because it’s 0.001 L bigger than the limit.” Friday: “We never meant to circumvent the rules 🤡”

The real cost isn’t just money. It’s Poland’s lost competitiveness. In 2023, Google, Amazon, Mercedes & IKEA all warned that Poland’s dirty energy mix could drive them to invest elsewhere.

What a cliffhanger! Historically, PiS tends to be underestimated in exit polls. 5 years ago, Duda increased his lead by exactly 0.6 pp, which is the same margin Nawrocki would need to overturn the result now. That means the final outcome of this election could really come down to every single vote

Poland's gov's green energy transition strategy? All talk, no action. A year in office, not a single law to advance renewables, while coal subsidies soar higher than Taylor Swift’s record-breaking ticket sales. 💸 Why is Poland stuck in the past? 👇 notesfrompoland.com/2025/01/17/a...

✅ Renewables hit a record 29% of electricity generation in Poland (up from 26% in 2023) – driven mainly by solar. 🌞 ❌ Coal still dominates, making up nearly 57% of the mix – the highest reliance in the EU. 🏭 #EnergyTransition #Poland #Renewables

Abortion rights were a major motivator for women to vote in #Poland. But a year after coming to power, #Tusk still hasn't been able to deliver on his promise to end the near-total abortion ban, leaving voters disillusioned. Feature for @notesfrompoland.bsky.social with @alicjaptak.bsky.social
