can't believe I'm starting my fourth year of my PhD very soon!! but first, a mammoth trip for my first ever @interspeech.bsky.social conference in Sydney. followed by some much needed r&r (or rather, city break, rainforest hiking and snorkelling) in my old home country, Malaysia 🥰

So the name you inherited from your mother, was that her fathers name or her mothers name? I assume you don’t inherit both otherwise the names would be infinite! A really interesting way of doing it

update: transcription good. diarisation bad. does anyone have tips for improving the accuracy?

trying this out for the first time today to see if it could be viable for transcribing our new corpus of forensically relevant female speech.

Which is the typical name used when the parent passes the name to the child? is it usually the father's, as it appears first? or is that not always the case?

Alice Paver @alicepaver.bsky.social · 29/06/2026
Yes I think very much so. I want to have the same name as my kids so I understand that, but as usual it’s the woman who has to give something up…

After a run of flat, floppy sourdough loaves (probably the heat?), look at this beauty I baked yesterday! We are SO back!!

Maybe I’m naive, but I’m still so shocked by how many straight women I see of my age who take their husband’s name when they get married. It’s 2026, I really thought it would be less common nowadays?

Yesterday was the mock court session for the MSc Forensic Speech Science students who presented their forensic speaker comparison evidence in a simulated trial at the University of York's moot court. They smashed itǃ A pleasure to be part of this experience with the team from Forensic Voice Centre.

Back in York again this week with the team at the Forensic Voice Centre, the second of my visits during my internship. This week I'm helping prepare for the mock court session for the current MSc Forensic Speech Science students at the University of York, as well as an online careers talk!

Another interesting Guardian article which includes some helpful debunking of the myth that there are reliable vocal cues to deceitful speech - although interesting that it's easier to tell lies from truth when we only hear a voice, as opposed to when we also see the speaker.

theconversation.com/amanda-seyfr... A really good piece here from Danielle Turton on recreation of historical accents and why the choices of accents and features matter, especially when they're 'regional' rather than RP.

The accent has been distracting for some because it sounds different to modern Mancunians.

after my starter dying, after months of trying so many techniques in our crappy oven to try and get a sexy ear on my sourdough loaf, of course it happened by accident as I left the dough out too long at the bulk fermentation stage. Probably won’t be able to replicate but hey ho!!!!
