The state inspector warned that the dam would overtop in a 100-year flood event or a six-hour rainfall. For instance, the McLead partially overtopped during an August 2022 storm that brought more than 6 inches of rain to the valley, contributing to erosion of the dam’s downstream slope.

I wasn’t picked to serve on my newspaper’s AI task force, but if I had been, this is one thing I’d bring up. It’s part of the broader issue of resisting anthropomorphism when writing about generative and other “learning” software. (Which we were trained to call AI with little skepticism.)

Headlines matter but still, I really, really, truly, in all earnestness, urge people to read the stories rather than make a snap judgement based on a headline that floats in their social media feed. It is an underreported fact that people are not reading news articles, even free ones. 2/2

I don’t know what software CNN uses, but I’ve worked with a few content management systems. Initial “social” headlines often come as a story is developing. They are hard or impossible to change later. If you open the story, you see a much firmer headline and story. 1/2

A reporter publicly defying lawful rules about videography at the Capitol or being rude and unprofessional toward officials would be kneecapping themselves, disabling their ability to work effectively, just to be cheered for a couple of hours on the vanity apps. Does that yield better journalism?

Part of left-leaning press-bashing is a demand that reporters behave in ways that would get them fired, reassigned, or otherwise benched. It’s not connected to anything that would improve the journalism. Lots of room for improvement, to be sure, and access isn’t everything.
