I would be the worst film programmer at TIFF. I’d go around the world, watch all the new movies, come to programming meetings and say, sorry folks - I haven’t seen anything good this year. We’ll be playing Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest in all my time slots. Ok bye!

It’s important that Backrooms takes place in 1990 to be considered a horror movie. If it was set in 2026 it would be a joyous film about affordable housing.

The only sense I walked away from “Wuthering Heights” is that Fennell genuinely thinks we’re all idiots.

Alex West @alexwest.bsky.social · 26/04/2026

Emerald Fennell stating she wanted to make a film of her experience reading the book when she was a teenager is so myopic and uninteresting. She drains the source material of life unable to let a moment breathe or have a character infer anything. Everyone is talking in objectives the whole time.

If the play is Hamlet your director thesis could be, this is a play about fathers and sons, or it about the performance of the self etc etc. The idea was, there are no wrong answers, but you need to have a clear POV that you want to communicate and find ways to bring the audience with you.

When I was in theatre school and taking directing classes, one of my teachers said, when you take on a text as a director you have to have a precise vision, a thesis. And then it is your job as a director to share that vision with the audience and give them something through that experience.

Finally got around to watching “Wuthering Heights” (2026) this evening. It was not for me in any way shape or form. I love the book. This film is not the book. Which led me to think about the nature of adaptations.

I think I’ve aged out of culture because I have to keep reminding myself that the headlines are not referring to this movie.

To me, great art articulates the things we feel but don’t have the vocabulary to express. Films like The Bride (again, for me) fail because they give us characters who affirm our POV back to us, never challenging or surprising us in the process.

One of the (many) wonderful things about my boyfriend is that he’s a fan of the original Star Trek and alerts me to the fact that they used to have aliens like this.

Spock holding a dog in a very obvious costume with a little horn on it. Best alien ever.

Back in 2017 my ex and I were looking to adopt a cat. We went to the Toronto Humane Society and the lovely guy working the cat section told us to go to the back and look for a tuxedo cat named Loon. We headed straight back, turned a corner and saw the prettiest green eyes.

I’m very unmoved by these PR strategies that have actors play icebreaker games for the internet. Bring me back to the time when a reporter would get dropped off at Russell Crowe’s ranch for a week and have an emotional affair with him.
