Today, we’re announcing the preview release of ty, an extremely fast type checker and language server for Python, written in Rust. In early testing, it's 10x, 50x, even 100x faster than existing type checkers. (We've seen >600x speed-ups over Mypy in some real-world projects.)

In the latest version of uv, we've updated the build system for our managed Python versions to use the latest LLVM version and cherry-picked an extra fix for a performance bug (github.com/llvm/llvm-pr...) and the early benchmarks are pretty exciting! On M3 macOS

Python 3.14.0a5 is out today in uv 0.5.31 and includes a new tail calling interpreter which, from some quick benchmarks, looks like a 1.23x performance improvement !

Another goal: minimizing false positives, especially on untyped code, to make it easier for projects to adopt a type checker and expand coverage gradually over time, without being swamped in bogus type errors from the start.

Performance is just one of many goals, though. For example: we're investing heavily in strong theoretical foundations and a consistent model of Python's typing semantics. (We're lucky to have Carl Meyer and @alexwaygood.bsky.social on the team for many reasons, this is one of them.)

The really cool thing about github.com/python/cpyth... is how little new C code had to be written. Nowadays CPython's interpreter is generated via a Python script, so the patch is a few hundred lines of Python modifying the interpreter generator, plus several thousand lines of generated C code!

#Python allows you to make instances of a custom class callable -- all you need to do is to add a `__call__` method to the class. But the `__call__` method doesn't actually have to be a function -- it can also be an instance of any callable class! This allows arbitrary chaining of `__call__` methods
