It has now agreed in principle, in writing. Metropolitan Housing Trust has still to reply, and in principle is not a transfer. A letter can be filed. A proposition has to be answered. northnorthantslibdems.org.uk/campaigns/pen-green-lakes #PenGreenLakes

That is why four years of letters achieved nothing. Every one asked it to break its own rules. This time it was asked something it could lawfully say yes to.

It did not choose this site. It inherited it when Corby Development Corporation was wound up. And as a public body it has best consideration obligations, so it cannot simply hand land over for nothing.

Worth being fair about Homes England, because a lot of the commentary hasn't been. #Corby
Pen Green grassland with the Corby skyline beyond: agreed in principle, not yet agreed in law.

The Corby Lib Dems proposed this as a motion backed at the CTC on 11th November. Today, it's a reality and a step further towards a safer place for all. This is part of out positive plan for Corby with more to come!

Last October, I campaigned for a safer Corby starting with a Knife Bin plus an outreach programme. Yesterday in Corby Town Centre it was installed by the good people at Off The Streets NN CIC after funding was provided by Corby Town Council.

What made Pen Green a poor housing site is what makes it a strong habitat bank: wet ground, scrub, hedgerow, mature trees, two waterbodies. Land that pays for its own care for thirty years. northnorthantslibdems.org.uk/campaigns/pen-green-lakes

Since 2024 most development in England must leave nature 10% better off. Developers who cannot manage it on their own site buy the difference from land registered as a habitat bank.

The honest question about a community asset isn't whether people want it. It's who pays to look after it in year fifteen. Pen Green can answer that itself. #Corby #PenGreenLakes
Wet ground, scrub, hedgerow, mature trees, two waterbodies. All of it counts.

This month Homes England agreed in principle, in writing, that Pen Green should become a community asset for Corby. That did not come from nowhere. It came from years of people refusing to let this land be quietly disposed of.

Mark Pengelly beat the 272 homes at Pen Green. Kevin Watt pushed the wildlife case for two years. They were right. This is their win too. #Corby

I will raise with Anglian Water to see if they can confirm the meaning of the water going into the brook and ask for an explanation

Alex Lock @alexlockld.bsky.social · 07/09/2026
I have yet to verify how that want is being pushed in but with the water pumping station there, it suggest at least overflow from the water system. It wasn't particularly pungent but it wasn't a nice fragrance. Corby demands better and demands our water not be a dumping ground for water companies.

Lib Dems have called out against the sewage scandal for ages - now it's here in #Corby just outside #PenGreenLakes. I went to see how the lakes have recovered with recent rains only to find water being inexplicably poured into Willow brook

At #PenGreenLakes there is Pen Green Bridge that crosses from East Lloyds into Willowbrook Industrial Estate. This path has been left poorly attended but could be a vital link to connect homes and employment for the people of Corby. It needs work and proper managing by the council to do this. #Corby

Farage has always behaved as though the rules apply to everyone but him. These allegations against Reform look like the latest example. Lib Dem Cabinet Office spokesperson @lisasmartmp.bsky.social has written to the police and the electoral commission asking them to investigate.

In June 2019 this system failed badly enough to derail a train and trap over 450 passengers for seven hours. The official report found flooding records here going back to 1968.

Open ground is flood infrastructure. It just doesn't look like it. Rain that soaks into Pen Green is rain that never arrives in the gardens behind Stephenson Way. Network Rail put flood risk here at 1 in 2. #Corby

Alex Bailey is our Liberal Democrat candidate for the Corby West by-election on Thursday 1 October. Alex backed the knife bin coming to Corby town centre, is pushing for trains north from Corby, and is campaigning to bring the town's fireworks back. Corby demands better.

#PenGreenLakes act as a vital defence for flooding for the rail and the homes nearby. It's an important part of the ecosystem that not only has the potential for beauty but natural flood defence. We continue to chase land owners to enable this to turn this place into a real community asset. #Corby

There is a reason Pen Green is open ground, and it is not an accident. It sits between one of the East Midlands' biggest industrial estates and several hundred homes. That gap is doing a job. #Corby

The campaign to make #PenGreenLakes an asset for all those in #Corby. They act as a vital flood defence, there are paths that connect homes to employment, and more. Inspired by the work done by others like Mark Pengelly and Kevin Watts. I believe now is the time to bring this up for all.

Free local bus travel is a vital lifeline for many disabled people. After an almost two-year campaign the Government has finally listened to Liberal Democrat calls to stop restrictions to disabled bus passes. Disabilities don’t start at 9.30am. Neither should disabled bus passes.
BBC News headline announces 24-hour free bus travel for disabled people in England; a crowd of cheering Liberal Democrat supporters hold bus-shaped placards and party signs celebrating the policy.

7,623 disabled people in Corby and East Northamptonshire rely on PIP. Reform would scrap it as it exists today. Cash gone for most. Means-tested for the rest. Liberal Democrats will defend the most vulnerable.

I'm autistic. I'm a parent of children with SEND. North Northamptonshire gives 1.9 children early help in mainstream school for every one holding a legal plan. England: 2.45. I won't pretend a ratio proves everything. But it points somewhere, and NNC owes families an answer.

Went to film the lakes at Pen Green. Filmed a lake that wasn't there — grey mud, cracked into plates. Built to empty, yes. Not to swing this hard, in the same year it holds water back off Stephenson Way. www.northnorthantslibdems.org.uk/ca…

One of the lakes at Pen Green is a cracked, empty bed right now. That is a balancing lake doing its job. The problem is the swing — driest July on record, and in winter this same ground is what protects Stephenson Way.

1,675 hours of raw sewage went into our brooks and rivers across Corby & East Northants last year — during a drought. 488 of those hours came from Corby's own sewage works, straight into Willow Brook. And the water bosses still took their bonuses. Enough. #SewageScandal
