Tinkering around the edges of community benefit policies don't go far enough. Cllr @alexjarmitage.bsky.social has got it right. We need bold intervention from the Scottish Government to promote more community wind!
“If government stays on the fence and supports both strategies of development, large corporations will easily overpower communities and dominate the physical and economic landscape.

“A responsible government needs to get off the fence, stand up to the power of corporations and intervene on behalf of communities. Government can provide the capital, legal and technical support to allow local communities develop their own energy infrastructure.”

The Shetland Greens have made huge gains in recent years, including electing Cllr @alexjarmitage.bsky.social to an otherwise very independent-minded council. It's been great chatting to people today about the reasons for that growing support, like our work to tackle the shortage of housing.

Great weekend campaigning with Shetland Greens for the Hollywood elections on the 7th of May. We are gaining one new member every single day at the moment. Many voters are switching to the Greens and it’s clear that we’re building a strong movement for the future in Shetland.

Energy corporations do not have our interests at heart. They will extract as much wealth and power as they are allowed to. We need to elect politicians that can stand up to corporate power, not those who are beholden to it.

This would nearly DOUBLE the UK's yearly emissions. How does this give kids a liveable future? How does this lower bills? How does this make the UK a leader on climate resilience? It doesn't. It makes more money for energy companies, & f❗cks up our future.

I am horrified to learn of the attack on the Peacehaven Mosque last night. My full solidarity and thoughts are with Muslim communities in Peacehaven and across the country.

The suspected arson attack comes just days after two people were killed in an appalling attack on a synagogue in Manchester as they attended Yom Kippur services. It also follows a spate of attacks on mosques across the country. It is no coincidence that this uptick in violence has increased as politicians of many stripes, including Prime Minister Keir Starmer, have dialled up divisive rhetoric, weaponising tragedy and pain for political gain.

The abhorrent hatred and spreading of fear cannot stand. I echo the sentiments of my colleague Zack Polanski last week that we must unite against hate and bring communities together.

We will continue to work with colleagues in Hackney, across London and across the country to find ways to build bridges and ensure every part of our community feels safe.
