Alexis Coe (@alexiscoe.bsky.social) writes about John F. Kennedy as a figure who never stopped revising himself. Beneath the Camelot mythology, she traces a life shaped by chronic illness, loss, and a steady habit of turning setbacks into structure. @jfklibraryfdn.bsky.social

The German American Bund’s 1939 rally at Madison Square Garden featured enormous banners, American flags, swastikas, and a giant portrait of George Washington. But it was a political organization’s rally, not the federal government’s event.

On this day in 1560: Countess Elizabeth Bàthory – alleged to be among the most sadistic female serial killers in history – is born in Nyírbátor, Hungary (d. 1614). Was Bàthory actually guilty? Doubtful. But it sure makes for a good story. More from Alexis Coe: the-toast.net/2014/02/05/e...
Portrait painting titled “Portrait of a Lady, Three Quarter Length, in a Ruff with Matching Lace Cap and Cuffs,” by Dutch artist Anthonie Blocklandt van Montfoort, c. 1580.

The subject is a young woman dressed in aristocratic 16th-century, Northern European attire, featuring an elaborate cartwheel ruff collar, a black sleeveless overcoat, and detailed lace cuffs.

While officially a painting of an anonymous model, this image has been widely used in popular culture, internet lore, and book covers to represent Countess Erzsébet (Elizabeth) Báthory, the infamous Hungarian noblewoman dubbed the "Blood Countess, notorious for accusations of serial murder. However, there are no definitively confirmed portraits of the Countess, nor any concrete evidence that Bàthory actually committed the grisly crimes in question.

The artwork is currently in a private collection and is often depicted in modern media as a "dark historical" or "gothic" print.
