'Post-1945 democracy was a gendered democracy, with power concentrated in the hands of men rather than women,'"Conway states. (See repost below)

Masculinist politics was not unavoidable after 1945. For a few years after WWII it looked -at least across ECE - like the tables might be turning. #MSCA_RECKON

Post 1945, masculinist politics "was a compromise, a way democracy was joined together with other ideological, political, and social forces in Europe at the time.", argues Conway.

"We should not think of the ascendancy of democracy after 1945 as a triumph," argued Conway while delivering the 17th Gerald Stourzh Lecture on History of Human Rights and Democracy at the University of Vienna.

Gender inequality remains the most durable form of inequality. Oxford historian Martin Conway has a radical claim: #democracy helped reinforce it. Johanna Taufner from #univie talks with Conway about the model of male-centred citizenship that dominates Western democracy & the manosphere. ⤵️🔍

This was a thoroughly enjoyable part of my MSCA_RECKON training and the Herder Institute in Leipzig does a fantastic job with the C1 classes for those who want to join the German higher education system.

You forget, but it's a great joy to be in a structured learning environment for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week. I was proud of my English C1 certificate at 18 - my teacher didn't want me to do it and was shocked I passed with flying colors. I'm about as proud of the work for C1 German now.

Of course, comfortably auditing a presentation on legal issues in data management in German wouldn't have been something I signed up for without the 2 months of intensive German C1 courses in April and May.

I had just finished my Data Management Plan for my project #MSCA_RECKON a few hours before, it was great to hear a detailed, very concrete presentation on EU and German law concerning data. Truly useful, helped me tick through the mental checklist of "hope I understood correctly" items!

This blog accompanies the MSCA research project »Women’s Politics and Postwar Reconstruction in Romania« by Alexandra Ghiț. How did women politicians and grassroots activists shape the postwar remaking of key political fields? RECKON will investigate the gendered transformation of public health, labour, foreign affairs and culture after World War II, with a focus on Romania 1944–1948.It regularly features reflection pieces that provide insights into ongoing research, prefiguring interpretative lines and offering a glimpse of the findings to be unpacked in longer-format publications. The blog and the research project are funded by the European Union under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA).
