“In the two Yemen incidents—which hit a port and a detention centre—the [DOD] report accepted that the strikes killed 80 and 68 civilians respectively,” making them the highest civilian death tolls DOD has acknowledged for strikes since one in Mosul in 2017 that it acknowledged killed 105 civilians.

This is right. It is another symptom of the problem I identified in On Operations: the U.S. military knows how to employ violence. It doesn’t know how to do so strategically. It doesn’t know because it deliberately trains and educates its people that they don’t have to know.

Good @thehighside.bsky.social report on the “HEU raid” bandied about on TV this spring as if it would be a quick, easy thing. Key: JSOC has trained for versions of this for years—but *not* for a version where the target facilities have been pulverized first. Yet JSOC generals still pushed for it.

I think it’s gone extremely under the radar that Hezbollah has managed to effectively adapt the use of FPV drones against the IDF to inflict steady casualties. I’m sort of still agnostic on these strike capabilities long term compared to other systems. But fiber optic cables are giving people fits.

I mean people were doing Scud hunting with Mk 1 eyeball and really low-quality 1980s TV pods. FLIR was new and ISAR/SAR capable aircraft were rare. That is why Scud hunting was shit. Even by these "metrics", the 12 day war and Epic Failure have had better outcomes than the Scud hunt in 91.

The Iranians traded the survival of their launchers for being able to attack the US/ISR. Entirely reasonable ofc, but this meant their tempo fell off. But seeing how firing 500+ missiles in less than 4 days did little to US/ISR ops, saving launchers for after the war was (probably) more important

According to some open-source reconstructions, a lot of the nice long range stuff was sent after probably empty IRGC admin facilities or other targets with no bearing on the war. Why? Are we simply running down the target list?

With the desert air strip used in the rescue being this close to Isfahan, seems likely JSOC repurposed the one they’d been planning on using for the highly enriched uranium raid if ordered. Safe to say these events drastically decrease the odds of the JSOC HEU mission taking place.

This assumes the Israelis or US are trying to intercept every missile fired. This is not the case, if the missile is headed for an empty area, it isn't intercepted. Large Iranian MRBMs have pretty bad CEP and even when fired at cities, it is still missing by a significant level.
