“He was exactly what the Domes needed, when they needed it.” — A spark between his robot fingers.
“He was kind, and benevolent, and ruled with a gentle fist made of space iron.” — The Domes, at peace.
Wrapping up, Avi finishes, “But now he's... slowing down.”

“A diplomatic— He’s a friend,” says an unimpressed and slightly annoyed Avi.
But Mayor Nynke isn’t particularly impressed either, and casts a doubtful look upon him.

It’s a beautiful, cloudless day on Nox Islia, and the new mayor is paying Avi and Aquila a visit in the Castle. It’s not a friendly visit.
“I don’t want to be difficult, Aquila, but please no more wild poison plants. If you must, at least put a fence around them.”
“Or what?”
“Or I’ll ask what you need poisons for.”
“...I will think about a fence.”
Avi interrupts them. “Babe, you’ve got an email.”
“You read her email?”
“I don’t have email.”
“She forgets she has email.”
Aquila seriously considers the grave implications of this for a second, then earnestly says, almost more to herself, “I really don’t think I have email.”
“Just read the email!!”

8:20. Watched the sun rise together.

9:10. "I know you've been doing this for thousands of years, why does that mean you can't bring a blanket. Or a hat. I worry about you out in the cold." "I'm fine."

10:00. Avi tells me about Hourly Comics Day. I'm not very online. But I catch up.

"It was never gonna be you versus me," Avi says to Aquila, helping her get up.
They lock lips as a voice over the arena's speakers interrupts them. "Ahem. The game mode you selected requires a single winner. No winner, no crown."
"You love me, right," asks a chipper Avi.
"You will take victory from my cold, dead hands," says a chipper Aquila.

The battle continues, Avi and Aquila in equal pursuit of each other around the arena.

Later, outside, on a bench in front of a hedge, the group reflects on the game.
"I hate the annual laser tag game," says a frustrated Inger Lint.
"You just hate losing," says Doc Robin.
"Couldn't be me," says Avi, wearing a red paper crown, Aquila's arm around his shoulders, "big fan of winning."
"So you do this every year?" an excited Annie asks.

"There's no sensor on my back," Avi says, defiantly, the lasergun to the back of his head.
"You'll never make the turn fast enough," says Aquila, "But wouldn't you like to try? Or do you see another way out?"
Avi sweats profusely as he tries to think of one, but doesn't need to. Aquila gets thrown to the side, dropping her lasergun, as she gets shot in the shoulder pad from the right.
"Any regrets?" asks the lasershooter.
"Besides agreeing to wear the joint-locking pads?" Aquila says, her right shoulder locked in place by the shot. "You tell me."
"What?" Annie, the lasershooter, says, seconds before taking a laser to the chest. "Aw dinger."

Avi watches his friend on the ground, glowing red, and declares -- "I'll... I'll avenge you." But then.
A lasergun, Aquila's, already pointed squarely at the back of his head.
"Will you?"

"She must've spotted us," whispers Annie.
"We need to get out of here, stat."
"I thought we were doing us vs her," Avi weighs in.
"Yeah, well," says Annie, "I didn't feel like getting picked off one by one."
"I'm just saying. People are usually happier at the end if she's, you know. Confident. Instead of scared."

"I've killed gods." Fog and her body lit only by the lights contained inside her knee, shoulder, and chest pads, Aquila dramatically announces her presence on the battlefield -- of laser tag. "I've written more endings than you can even image beginning. Empires have fallen over my mere presence. The moon rises and the sun sets because I allow them to. Do you truly believe I couldn't handle the four of you?"
Aquila announces them one by one.
"A teenager who fell from the sky."
Hearing her words from across the arena, we find Annie, looking resolute, whispering to herself "...Gods?"
"A writer who crawled out of a hole."
Avi, looking determined, eyes casting a glance over a box obstacle.
"A pretend scientist."
Doc Robin, looking nonplussed, sitting on the stairs.
"And a paranoid, delusional lump of a man."

"She scared you a little, huh?" asks Avi, as the sun illuminates the castle from a little higher up.
"Hm-hm."
"I'm sorry."
"No, it's— I wasn't really thinking about what I was saying," says a sad Annie.
"You caught a contradiction and called it out, I get it," says Avi, as he fills a small pan with some tap water. "But you have to remember she's... thousands of years older than we are. Her life is a contradiction. Encyclopedias and history books are mere attempts to... reconstruct her real life lived experiences. And she can be intense sometimes." Avi, his hair in a ponytail, is holding a carton of eggs. "Go put these plates out. Then go apologise to her. Bonus points if you get yours out before she can apologise to you, because she will definitely have realised she was being a jerk, too."
Holding three plates, Annie smiles.

"Annie. Can I give you some advice?" Aquila asks, an eyebrow raised.
"Sure."
Aquila gets up and stretches, and does so, "When somebody opens up to you about something deeply personal?" She takes several large steps forwards and then, grabbing Annie by the shoulder, says to her face, "Do not tell them they're incorrect."
"R- right," Annie says, halfway through a step backwards.
Already having walked away, Aquila leaves Annie, still halfway stepped back, with a curt "See you at breakfast."

"Or, I suppose, an offering. To Eos, goddess of the dawn," Aquila adds, looking up at Annie, the sunlight putting an awed sparkle in her eyes, "I make this sacrifice, every night, over and over, so that the next time I see her, she knows, that of all the places she'll touch, this one is... good."
Annie considers this, and then says "You mean Aurora."
"Excuse me?"
"You told me you were Roman. Eos is the Greek version of Aurora."
Aquila considers this. And her chipper mood turns.

Aquila the Last Eagle in An Act of Worship

Dawn on a tranquil Nox Islia. The sun colours a deep blue sky with magnificent flows of white, yellow, and green.
"Coffee?" asks Annie.
"You're up early," says Aquila, accepting the coffee, still seated at her still smoldering campfire.
"Always been a morning person."
Aquila drinks heartily, illuminated from behind by the rising sun.
"So what do you... do here, all night?" asks Annie. "If you don't mind me asking."
"Guard the island," Aquila answers cheerily, "So that all who sleep on her may do so easily."

Nynke, wearing a jean jacket and jean overalls (joveralls) takes in her victory as she enjoys the comforts of what is, for the first time, her office. The couches have been reupholstered with purple fabric. She looks outside the window, and waves at Nox Islia. Then, somewhat ominously, she mutters to herself, "Power."
Sitting down, she continues, "A lot of things are going to change around here. As soon as I... figure out how to change them."

This was Untitled Mayor Story. A story about the mayor.

Mayor Nynke sits in her office and considers her new station in life.
