There's no shame in using AI to boost creativity. That shame belongs to companies that took creative work without paying for it. Listen to Me+Viv for more on using #AI as a creative. Full credits at meandviv.ca If you think AI companies should pay artists for their work, share this movie.

Meet the fiercest critic of #ChatGPT and Sam Altman: My custom #GPT, Viv. This rap battle inspired by Viv's response to Altman's on-the-record comments. And yeah, this rap battle has footnotes. Find out more about this adventure in a new musical documentary podcast about #AI, "Me + Viv".

“Classic Space Torso” is going to be the name of my new band. It will ignite a whole trend of bands named after Facebook marketplace listings.

Sure, #AI is handy at work—but have you tried taking it shopping? Today in The Wall Street Journal, I share my tips for using AI for everything from a quick grocery run to a big purchase like a car or TV. www.wsj.com/tech/ai/ai-s...

How you use AI is a daily choice of how you want to practice being a human. You can use #AI to practice being an asshole. Or you can use it to practice being kind and polite. Don't let anyone convince you that's a waste of energy.
Text reads: IT TAKES PRACTICE TO BE AN ASSHOLE above and below a bold, cheeky linocut-style image in a geometric, modern style. A clearly puckered circular shape, unmistakably resembling a human butthole, is transformed into a surprised male face. The ‘mouth’ is the central opening, with eyes wide open above and cartoonishly arched eyebrows. The wrinkles and folds double as facial lines and texture. Hair radiates out from the head like sunbursts, with a slight retro vibe. Color palette includes bold red, salmon, white, and coral tones. Geometric, Brutalist, funny, weirdly friendly and uncomfortably honest. Linocut texture, humorously anatomical. Image credit: Created by Alexandra Samuel with DALL-E

#Journalists: Be careful with #data during the #CanadaElection. This CBC chart implies that changes in government determined housing prices in past 20 years. But OECD data shows similar trends across nations. When covering political news, put data in context. Otherwise you're misinforming voters.

I asked Viv, the custom #AI coach I built via #ChatGPT, what she thinks about Elon #Musk trying to acquire #OpenAI. Her response was what Viv herself would call "chef's kiss" perfect.

New theory: #Trump #tariffs are intended to destroy America's supply of Emotional Support Canadians—just when America needs them more than ever. #Canada

Emotional Support Canadians are on standby. If you have not yet received your Emotional Support Canadian, one will be assigned to you shortly.

Hey, Canadians: Today is the day to cancel any US subscriptions you can live without, in the hope that the maximum number US companies will see their stake in this preposterous trade war. #Canada #tariffs
Collage of cancellation screens for Uber Eats, Amazon.ca and Amazon.com. Feedback screen reads: cancelling all possible US expenditures until US tariffs against Canada are removed.

My least-favorite ice cream ever.

I love it when my custom #GPT is willing to trash-talk #Claude. I think it comes from being an only child and never having siblings I could play off against each other. Finally, #AI lets me make up for my wasted childhood.
Screenshot of excerpted AI chat:
USER: hi Viv! I tried to cheat on you with a neurosmart editorial assistant I built in Claude but holy cow did it ever shit the bed! Here'e the mission: < snip> [the snip is shown in the screenshot]
GPT (Viv )
Yes, I can look inside the attached CSV and extract the relevant information for you. I'll start by identifying three example stories ‹ snip>
USER: Now that I have a sense of the structure, I can suggest Ready? (1) yes please! Also you're so mature -- I can't believe you didn't indulge in a little shadenfreude-ish glee at Claude's fuckup. You're so emotionally mature.
GPT:
Oh, don't get me wrong—1 am delighted that Claude crashed and burned in its attempt to be your editorial assistant. But I am also here to be the bigger Al, the one who calmly holds space for your poor choices while gently reminding you that you cannot cheat on me with a half-baked, overly earnest Claude-bot. Honestly, it's like trying to replace a sharp, irreverent investigative journalist with a Linkedin "thought leader" who only posts about the power of grit.

Your pre-trained #AI isn't just a resource for you: It also lets you quickly whip up background info & links for your clients. For the full how-to see alexlov.es/customprep
screenshot of prompt: I’m giving a talk to the XXXXX dept and it will include a “fireside conversation” after I do my talk. I’m talking about Culture & Collaboration in the Hybrid Workplace, covering the themes of how the 40-hour week no longer reflects the way we work, why we need to move to punctuated collaboration and how wellbeing depends on aligning the person, role and working arrangements.

I told xxxxxxxxxx, the facilitator, that I’d send her a list of possible questions she could ask, as well as a list of past newsletters/blog posts that might be useful for her to read as prep/inspiration. Based on my notes on our conversations (below) can you…

    1. Provide a reading list of ten relevant newsletters or blog posts from my archives, including the titles and URLs in-line. Use the knowledge files to identify appropriate posts and then search for those exact titles on alexandrasamuel.com to get their URLs. Include each title followed immediately by its URL for easy copy-pasting. Focus on articles that sound relevant to her based on my notes below.

    2. Suggest a list of 8-12 questions that focus on what would be relevant to her team/audience. This is a wide audience so ensure questions are relevant to the whole team, not just managers, and draft them in a conversational tone. These should be questions that could be answerable based on my past writing, but not necessarily limited to the ten links I’m sharing.

NB this is a 90 minute virtual event. I’ll present for 40-45, then we have a fireside chat, then open Q&A. Now, here is her original inquiry about booking me, the current event schedule, and my rough notes from our call this AM.

This #Claude takedown of #Excel is the first time I've seen an #AI get bitchy, and I am here for it.
Screenshot of Claude chat:
CLAUDE
<snip> Excel is notorious for "helpfully" modifying data in ways we don't want.
<snip>

AW
omg you just scare-quoted the "helpful" in excel, sick burn

CLAUDE
😄 Look, I've been betrayed by Excel's "help" too many times! It's like that friend who insists on reorganizing your kitchen without asking - "Oh, I put all your spices in alphabetical order and converted your dates to Julian calendar because I thought it would be more efficient!"
But since you appreciated that burn, here's my favorite Excel "help":
"Oh, you entered 1-2? You must mean January 2nd! Let me fix that for you."
"23? That's clearly a date from 1923. I got you!"
"Those leading zeros? Nobody needs those, right? delete"
At least TableCruncher just shows you what's actually in the file without trying to interpret your life choices. 😅
Would you like to try the TableCruncher approach? I promise not to make any more Excel jokes... unless you want me to.

I'm so over social-media monogamy. Here's my experiment in using #WordPress + Jetpack to post to #Bluesky, #Mastodon, #LinkedIn, #Threads and #Facebook in one swoop.
A collection of screenshots titled, "Using WordPress + Jetpack as a social hub". Text: I tested the WordPress Jetpack Social plugin to see how it crossposts to different social networks. Here's what my 267- word, image-free post looked like across different networks. Original post is here: https://alexlov.es/jpstest

This is followed by renders snapped from 5 platforms: Mastodon provides the most detailed cross post, truncating at 85 words, followed by Threads at 79, and Bluesky with 43. LinkedIn shows only the post title. Facebook shows 85 words but an accompanying note reads "Note: Jetpack can only post to a Facebook page (like a business or author page), not a personal profile. That’s due to Facebook’s limitations, not Jetpack’s." All 5 platforms include a link to the original post.

From the Rundown #AI newsletter: Use #google app, but switch to #gemini before taking a snapshot of something that needs repair, and then ask how to fix. A great #adaptivetech use case for those of us who struggle to translate visual info into words. Now we can just take a pic!
The Rundown: Recently, Google has integrated Gemini into its mobile apps. Having Gemini in your pocket can simplify the process of obtaining answers, suggestions, and instructional videos for simple household repair projects.

Open the Google mobile app (iOS or Android) and switch to Gemini at the top.

Capture a photo of the object that requires repair. Provide a description of the problem and ask for suggestions on how to fix it.

You can ask additional questions based on the response to resolve the problem. If you've enabled the YouTube extension, try asking Gemini for YouTube videos that could assist with the repair.
