Today I was sequence maxxing at the UMaine CORE DNA Sequencing Facility. I had all three platforms running simultaneously: Sanger (ABI 3730), Nanopore (Mk1d), and Illumina (MiSeq). Short reads, long reads, and targeted reads all happening at once.

Check out the latest from @cathyhernandez.bsky.social, where she shows that prophage activity underlies intraspecific variation in thermal tolerance AND evolutionary rescue in response to extreme temperature challenge. This is one for prophage peeps and climate change peeps.

Well the award for most cowardly, boot-lickingest academic society has squarely gone to the American Society of Microbiology, who has taken down features of various non-white scientists. Absolutely pathetic behavior. Those articles are now coming up as “under review”. Truly sickening cowardice here.

Why did pages supporting DEI need to be "under review" in the first place? @asm.org is not a government organization. It is not subject to the Executive Orders, which call for the systematic erasure of many ASM members. This is a pathetic, cowardly excuse for voluntarily complying with fascism.

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

🤯 Supposedly running ONT flow cells in the dark drastically increases output.
Photo of a Twitter thread (https://twitter.com/SurroundScience/status/1705643180123914702?t=GjMdi6Gt-o1ODGXsQ1mBNQ&s=19) that describes a >400% increase in nanopore output by running it in the dark.
