The reason the spires are there is to keep the sky at bay.

A postcard, front and back.

The front shows the Down Cathedral in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. The various sharp spires of the cathedral are highlighted against the sky.

The back reads: The reason the spires are there is to keep the sky at bay. When it falls, the threat of impalement will force it back up again. Why did no one tell you of this fact? Well, think of the mass panic ensuing when the entire world realizes the sky is just the roof of a mouth waiting to chew us all into mush. That is why you're only being informed of this now that you're taking over care of the cathedral. At night, when no one is paying attention, the sky patiently grinds away at the spires, gently, so it doesn't hurt itself, but even the slowest, lightest effort will eventually wear away the stone. Think of those stone stairways centuries old with dips in the middle where countless people have stepped, each foot taking the smallest bit away. Now think of the sky.

I worked in VFX for 8 years, it wasn't an easy thing to decide I was done with it. Because I left though, I'm now a writer, a youtuber, I do part time jobs that pay my way around this frankly, ridiculous planet of ours. And I get to SEE that planet. I get to have the adventures without burning. 2/
