It won’t even happen. They don’t have enough for their domestic needs. Perhaps a dribble will make it to the US for propaganda purposes but no more. He has exposed himself for nothing. Pitiful.

Right. I think the potential for more strategic coordination of HE activity to accelerate regional/sectoral development is quite exciting. I just hope the new admin can see the obvious parallels of “attracting talent to a region/country, educating them and persuading them to stay is good, actually”.

But this raises some quite different questions when applied to a national context…

I’m no AI booster but isn’t health (+ medical science broadly) one area with huge potential productivity upsides? Can’t expect Moore’s Law growth but the predictive power of pattern recognition + shift to more preventative care could have profound impact. + new drug patents only last 20 years…

The chance meeting of two strangers in a bar who are both sitting/drinking alone is such a plot staple (cliche) of American movies and TV shows, it can be hard to remember how completely culturally alien that is to Brits. (Occasionally British screenwriters forget and include a similar setup..)

And of course by far the biggest spenders of apprenticeship levy funds on management training and mid career professional development have been…? Yep, the NHS and other public sector organisations.

Alex Proudfoot @alex.ihe.ac.uk · 24/06/2026
The government doesn’t. It’s Deloitte’s money that the levy is designed to make them ringfence for training. If they don’t spend it all it goes into a general pot. This government actually came in with a policy of letting them spend less on apprentices (mostly new hires) and more on short training.

Came here to find your tweet… Right there with you. What a wasted decade. What a wrong turn. Their faces may be well and truly spited, but it turns out noses are quite useful after all.

This is amazing, congratulations! I have such respect for your tireless efforts pursuing moral and legal accountability in the online wild west, and the EHRC has a critical role in doing the same within wider society.

It’s brilliant, this season especially. The episodes have an almost symphonic quality in how they combine intense emotion, recurrent themes, rapid tonal shifts and a real formal beauty. They use music itself skilfully of course, which is a powerful element. The last episode as a great example..

What is immoral is not adjusting immigration policy (and really more importantly, economic and education policy) to reduce numbers coming in or even increasing outflow. It is tearing up an established contract between the state and law-abiding individuals who were told they had permanent residence.
041
Alex Proudfoot @alex.ihe.ac.uk · 22/10/2025
It’s horrendous, but also as @sundersays.bsky.social has pointed out it is not just one MP’s immoral aberration, it appears to be official party policy…?
021
Alex Proudfoot @alex.ihe.ac.uk · 22/10/2025
It’s immoral and unfair and un-British and would materially (and rightly) damage our reputation in the world. Honestly what on earth are they thinking?
000
Alex Proudfoot @alex.ihe.ac.uk · 12/10/2025
Well yes. OfS have publicly floated this as a possibility. The hard political and economic reality of implementing such a policy hasn’t become any easier since the last time it was floated and abandoned, however…

Thank you for the moral clarity and (all too rare) common sense. We must be unafraid of articulating our values if we are to have any hope of defending them.

Thank you for saying this. Hopefully many other MPs will speak up too. Parliament needs to present a united front against such a clear threat to our democracy and explicit incitement to racist violence. The vast majority of the country is with you.

This is absolutely true but those millions want to see the significant and growing threat to the country posed by anti-democratic, intolerant and racist movements (+ their cynical leaders) explicitly recognised, resisted and condemned. Need Government + Parliament as a united front against this now.

Thank you for the moral clarity + challenge, Jonathan. At the bare minimum the vast majority of people in UK who reject a politics of violence + hatred can no longer close our eyes and hope the global rising tide of racist grievance + disintermediated lies will not wash up on our shores. It’s here.

Personal note: went to (some) of the countermarch yesterday, and then watched TV coverage of both. @sundersays.bsky.social is right that the far-right/racists on the main march are a (small) minority whose numbers are not growing. It's the apparent paralysis of the majority that scares me. [1/n]

The OfS free speech guidance fails to grasp the diversity + complexity of modern HE provision – comfortable reminiscing on the cut+thrust of debate in an Oxbridge college set; nothing to say on e.g. a professional workplace where students are also staff. Read our response: ihe.ac.uk/latest/news/...

Sooner or later, one of three things is going to happen. Universities can find money at home, or they can find it abroad. But if they don’t find it, some are going under. In defence of international students.

I just read the article itself. His full comments seem thoughtful + nuanced, concerned mostly with unequal health outcomes. It’s a defence of effective EDI policies, not a pile-on, let alone amplifying the far right as Mr Maugham has rather abruptly leapt to. Is that really worth a ‘fuck this guy’?
