A study published in Agriculture & Food Security describes a spatial model to assess the impacts of climate change on food security dynamics, highlighting the role of spatial structure on food security degradation and recovery over the long term. 🌍
bit.ly
Explicit spatial–temporal scenarios of food security in a West-African socio-ecological system under climate change - Agriculture & Food Security
Food security is a key facet of a sustainable society, while some threats, such as climate change and food riots may unsettle any society. Some aspects of food security such as food production and distribution are inherently spatial, thus requiring spatialized methods to study it. In this study, we introduce Discrete Ecosystem Evolution Rules (DEER), which is a spatial generalization of the EDEN framework developed in environmental sciences. Based on extensive expert knowledge and literature, we developed both spatially implicit and explicit models to assess the impacts of climate change on food security dynamics in a complex West-African social-ecological system (Dano, Burkina Faso). Comparing these two models allowed highlighting the role of spatial structure on food security degradation and recovery over the long term. Results showed that the impacts of climate change on food security were mediated by water availability and soil degradation. The spatial model provided a finer understanding of food security dynamics by highlighting unexpected sequences of events. These insights highlight the relevance of a spatial modeling framework to get a proper understanding of food security and, more generally, of social-ecological dynamics.

Role of A2 milk in rural transformations: Health benefits, market potential, and sustainable production pathways - Dairy Science and Management
This review examines the health benefits, market potential, and sustainability of A2 milk products derived from cattle with the A2A2 β-casein genotype, highlighting their role as a tool in rural transformation, particularly in the Global South, where integrated perspectives on nutritional innovation and socioeconomic development remain underexplored. By addressing this knowledge gap, this synthesis combines current scientific evidence, market data, and policy discussions to examine the biochemical basis of A2 milk, its health benefits, and the socioeconomic opportunities associated with promoting its production through sustainable, rural-based livestock systems. The global A2 milk market, valued at USD 4.0 billion in 2024, is projected to grow at an annual rate of 18.5% through 2030, driven by rising health consciousness and consumer willingness to pay premium prices for high-value agricultural (HVA) products. Indigenous cattle breeds with naturally high frequencies of the A2A2 genotype offer sustainable production pathways while supporting genetic conservation, and non-bovine species such as water buffaloes exhibit exclusive A2A2 homozygosity, making all buffalo milk naturally A2, while goats and sheep show higher A2 allele frequencies compared to cattle, positioning them as safer alternatives with lower β-casomorphin release potential. Small-scale dairy farming systems, especially those organized through cooperatives, present opportunities to enhance rural livelihood through premium pricing for HVA products such as A2 milk. However, scientific validation, regulatory standardization, and supply chain segregation remain. Limited clinical trials and inconsistent certification frameworks continue to constrain broader market expansion. This review presents A2 milk as a convergence point of nutritional innovation and rural development, emphasizing value-added products, niche market segments, and the potential of indigenous cattle, non-bovine species, and cooperative models in scaling sustainable dairy production.

A recent paper published in Aquaculture Science & Management from @unibergen.bsky.social describes the use of newly developed AcuLice to remove salmon lice - one of the biggest challenges in Atlantic salmon farming which significantly affects the salmon farming industry income every year. 🌍
bit.ly
Follow-up study on acoustic de-licing of Atlantic salmon: effect on growth and stress physiology of Atlantic salmon and cleaner fish - Aquaculture Science and Management
Acoustic lice treatment (AcuLice) is a newly developed system which uses a composite acoustic sound image with low-frequency sound to remove salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) from Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The impact of the AcuLice system in Atlantic salmon and lumpfish was evaluated according to primary, secondary and tertiary stress responses in one location (Hattasteinen) with AcuLice system operating in 6-week cycles and in a reference location (Tittelsnes) without the AcuLice system. Appetite and behaviour were also recorded. Fish from Hattasteinen, both Atlantic salmon and lumpfish showed a normal growth pattern, with no alterations in biometric indexes that could be interpreted as a sign of tertiary (chronic) stress response. Atlantic salmon from the reference location exhibited a reduced appetite and slower growth at the beginning of the trial, suggesting that stock differences are much more important than any potential effects produced by the AcuLice system. There were no changes in feeding, swimming or aggressive behaviour that could be attributed to the AcuLice operation. In summary, no negative effects in Atlantic salmon or lumpfish that could be linked to the operation of the AcuLice system were observed in this trial.
