Let's hope it won't be too long after that that the judgment is handed down. I won't hold my breath though..

People ask, what are the alabaster medallions of well known jurists like in the normally closed old court building in Southport? Well, take a look at these art deco marvels: (1) Sir Edward Coke /1

Rewatched this series earlier this year. Very enjoyable. And it makes me also appreciate the recent film version even more because of how well the actors were cast in that new version - as well as how much was packed into it without feeling like it was too much or too long.

Surprising Briggs is older than Reed. Still I'm sure Sales will have his turn, assuming he'll still want it. He's too good not to be PSC.

I had precisely the same reaction. I suspect they consider (quite rightly) Lord Sales a young 'un so he will have his turn later. Briggs, however, I think only has a few years left before retirement?

Very sorry to hear of the death of Gwilym Owen. He was a very talented scholar & teacher, and above all a kind, supportive & gentle person. I had the privilege of attending the excellent lecture in his honour given by @gwenseabourne.bsky.social just 2 weeks ago. RIP. www.bangor.ac.uk/iswe/news/dr...

It is (or rather was) considered the leading text on discretionary trusts (trust powers). I am writing an article about such trusts, showing where we have gone wrong historically in our analysis, leaving us today with a limited view/understanding of these trusts.

Lawyers/academics: does anyone have a copy of Hardingham & Baxt's 'Discretionary Trusts' book (2nd edn 1984) they would be willing to sell? Or know where/how I'd be able to buy it? Please let me know - I'd like my own copy (fed up of having to go to library to read it). Will pay good money for it!

Oh no. Roy Goode has died. An amazing man. Easily the most important commercial lawyer of the last century. He was an autodidact, teaching himself how things worked and then explaining it on to others from scratch, which was how he pushed things forward.

Is the disbelief greater when it causes swearing or laughing? I read something the other day by a well-known academic and couldn't help but chuckle at an absurd statement they made. A nice reminder that world-renowned professors can still serve up whoppers.

Sir Stephen Hough concert today. What an incredible pianist 🎼 and a very interesting setlist. You could see most people become uncomfortable during the Schoenberg and Stockhausen pieces - and then relax once the Beethoven began! Nice take on the Mary Poppins pieces too.

Exactly. Recently read a case which has been cited in Snell for the last 150+ years - but the case does not stand for the proposition they claim it does at all! Let's hope the time-pressed authors of practitioner texts don't start using AI as well..

Being a pragmatic approach, I can see why judges find it very attractive. But that doesn't mean they need to be wedded to it. Australian judges, for example, are not blind to its attractiveness - but they don't forgo careful analysis in their judgments (some of them at least)!

This lecture is now published in the CLJ: www.cambridge.org/core/journal... Whilst I wasn't expecting forensic analysis, some of the analysis is sloppy. In an article about 'equitable ownership' you would expect some engagement with (or even mention of!) discretionary trusts and charitable trusts..
