I hit the heart because I appreciate your coverage of this so much, but I'd prefer a giant THUMBS DOWN I could give this news. So sorry for all the animation workers caught up in all this. 😔

Wonderful work as always! I watched this like 100 times to see if the slight misregistration in the paper was intentional. It didn't seem to be, but that might be fun to play with?! Like after it detaches the grape the paper could shift up/down for a few frames, while the drawing stays registered?

I agree. The most devastating moment for me was when the little girl, bewildered, is like "Wow, you're so good at that" when the boy from the future gives the bottle to her baby sibling and it instantly calms down. In her future she doesn't realize that ROBOTS should not be taking care of BABIES.

Yeah, I went with S last year and it was a really special experience for us both. Slightly intense in a few parts, but we made it through and it really sparked some interesting discussion afterwards.

I'm on my last audio book of his work (Edwin Drood) - it took me something like 20 years of washing dishes at night to get through them all. His writing is not without its issues, but it's an incredible body of work!

That's fine, but I don't think you can argue that The Shaggy Dog is anywhere in the same league. It's strange to me a company can't think like this. I do it all the time as a freelancer. Work on a less important projects to pay the bills so I can focus on my super important personal projects. 🤷

In hindsight, Sleeping Beauty stands the test of time as one of the greatest achievements of hand-drawn animation, and has made billions for their company through licensing, books, products, theme parks, etc. They could have subsidized a new one every six years! But no, more crappy live action!!

140

Alec Longstreth @aleclongstreth.bsky.social · 31/08/2026

This reminds me of Disney's 1959 releases. Sleeping Beauty was seen as a massive flop, losing millions, while The Shaggy Dog turned a big profit, more than covering the loss. Instead of seeing the crappy live action as subsidizing the timeless art, it was like "gut the animation department"

I've had to find a new printer every time I've moved (WA, CA, OR, NY, VT, CA, NM) and it is always a bit painful starting over. I had a good printer out here that died, and then the next one I found went out of business during 2020, so now I'm having to print out-of-state which is not ideal #jealous
