The draft document says the employers’ body Ibec found 46 per cent of organisations believed it was more challenging to attract and retain talent for on-site roles compared with those that allowed for flexible/remote working.

It says a survey of members of the public service trade union Fórsa found that 69 per cent would consider moving position to maintain or improve their hybrid or fully remote working arrangements.shocked Shatner

so employees say hybrid working makes them more productive and employers are broadly neutral or positive, but you wouldn't have guessed that from the headline
“A consistent finding is that employees tend to report higher or at least equivalent levels of personal productivity when working remotely or in hybrid settings due to greater autonomy, reduced commuting time, better work-life balance and improved capacity for concentrated work,” it says.

“Employer perspectives, while mixed, have increasingly shifted towards a broadly neutral or positive assessment, particularly where organisations have gained experience in implementing these arrangements, adapted their practices and processes and invested in organisational capacity building.”

“Tomorrow it’s important that middle Ireland comes out and says ‘we don’t want to send out a message about this country being far left. This country is not far left. This is a centrist country with lots of middle ground people and Heather Humphreys epitomises that,” Mr Harris told members of the Fine Gael party in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal on Ms Humphreys final day of campaigning in the presidential election.

wish I had time to phone but I also emailed my three TDs
Dear Darragh,

I'm writing to you and my other local TDs to express my concern about Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan taking a public stance this week against a recent information campaign run by the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre.

The DRCC is an important advocacy voice and developed its We-Consent campaign based on feedback from younger and older people. The decision of the Minister to impose his own opinions on an organisation and a campaign that speaks for vulnerable people. and aims to highlight issues around consent, is not without irony. It is also a concerning over-reach of the Minister's authority and worryingly, has helped to fuel an online pile-on against an essential and important advocacy group. I can only imagine the pressure that DRCC's team is now under as a result.

The Minister should walk back his remarks and show his support for DRCC, its work, and the vulnerable people that it represents. I hope that you and your party colleagues will offer your full support to the organisation.

Best regards,

Alan Dunne.

meanwhile Ireland's National Safety Camera Strategy is stuck in cross-departmental multidisciplinary purgatory
Decision of the Road Safety Leadership Group
The WG completed the draft of the Strategy in May 2025. Following this, the Department of Transport then carried out a series of bilateral meetings over the subsequent period with the stakeholders who would be tasked with implementing the Strategy. The insights provided throughout this series of meetings then informed the deliberations and decision of the Road Safety Leadership Group (RSLG) in relation to the Strategy.
The RSLG is an inter-departmental, ministerial committee responsible for overseeing implementation of the Road Safety Strategy. It is chaired by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Seán Canney TD, and includes the Minister for Justice, Assistant Secretaries from the Departments of Transport and Justice, the Assistant Commissioner for Roads Policing, and the CEOs of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), the National Transport Authority (NTA), the Road Safety Authority (RSA), the Courts Service, the Medical Bureau of Road Safety (MBRS), the Health & Safety Authority (HAS) and the City and County Management Association.
The following were agreed by the RSLG in its meeting on 17 February 2026:
1.
That the National Safety Camera Strategy’s Option 5 (Partnership of TII and NTA with AGS) is the preferred option for delivering camera enforcement going forward.
2.
The establishment of the Camera Enforcement Oversight Group to progress the objective of this Option.
3.
That National Safety Camera Strategy report will be updated to reflect the above decisions and be published.
4.
That the Camera Enforcement Oversight Group take overall responsibility for progressing the Strategy and that individual agencies and offices remain responsible for their core functions, including in the interim period before the Strategy is fully implemented.

this is how you report on AI companies' PR. context and knowledge from an actual expert
“Despite the well-designed experimental setup, the study does not, on its own, establish that small models would autonomously choose to replicate,” AI researcher Xiaohan Fu said in an interview. “Providing reproducible agent setups, including the exact prompts and instructions given to the models, would help the research community better understand the findings and assess their implications. Such transparency is particularly important to avoid conflating the demonstrated capability to replicate with an emerging threat of autonomous self-replication.”

Pervert Coughlan dies in prison at 90
By Debbie McCann
11 Oct 2026

A FORMER Christian Brother jailed for indecently assaulting children in primary schools in the 1970s and 1980s has died in prison.

Liam Coughlan, 90, was already in prison for sexually abusing school pupils in Kilkenny in the 1970s when he was sentenced in July to five years for sexual assaults on nine boys in a primary school in Portarlington in the 1980s.

Coughlan, who was terminally ill, died on Thursday after three years in prison. The Garda investigation into the Portarlington case began after a victim read a report in the Irish Mail on Sunday that his former teacher had been charged in Kilkenny in January 2022.

disappointingly it looks like the occasion passed by without fanfare but 19 September 2026 was the 75th anniversary of New York's first parking meter
New York Times article from 19th September 1951

First Parking Meters To Be Installed Today

After thirty-two months of talk and preparation, the city will install today its first parking meters on. 125th Street, Only a few of the 270 meters to be set between Morningside and Park Avenues will be in use when a ceremony initiating the new pro-gram takes place just west of Lenox Avenue at 12:30 Р. М.

The remainder of the devices will be installed on 125th Street next week and, by the end of October, all of the 1,500 meters in the initial experiment are slated to be in operation in five selected areas in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.

Pledging that it will do every-thing possible to make the test a success, the Metropolitan Garage Board of Trade announced that its members near 125th Street would offer special low rates of 50 cents to day-time parkers., Motorists using the meters will have to pay 10 cents an hour and legally cannot park for more than one hour.

an editorial in the same publication today sums it up pretty well: sue their asses www.nytimes.com/2026/10/10/o...
The theory of strict liability is simple: If you own a tiger, and the animal bites a neighbor, the essential fact is that you own a dangerous wild animal. It doesn’t matter how cleverly the tiger was trained, or how carefully it was guarded. Bryan Choi, a law professor at the University of Colorado, notes that in the early days of aviation, lawmakers imposed this strict liability standard on the dangerous new technology. In the case of A.I., top executives themselves have spoken publicly about the dangers, up to the possibility of human extinction.

be funny to see what happens if someone tells him about the time President Niyazov of Turkmenistan changed the names of the months and days of the week

Turkmenistan: National Council Renames Days, Months
August 08, 2002 02:00 CET

Turkmenabad, 8 August 2002 (RFE/RL) -- The Turkmen National Council voted on the first day of a two-day session to change the names of the days of week and months of the year. By a unanimous vote, some 3,000 delegates approved changing the name of January to "Turkmenbashi," the title bestowed on President Saparmurat Niyazov by parliament. December is now "Neitralitet" (Neutrality) reflecting Turkmenistan's UN-recognized status as a neutral country, given to the country in December 1995.The names of the week were changed to such new names as "first" or "main" day, Monday, and "Rukh" (spirit), for Saturday.

The council also dismissed any future talk of presidential elections with Safarmarmed Voliev, the head of the state gas and oil company, saying there was no need for any leader but the "beloved eternal President Saparmurat Niyazov."

loling at Haughey's apparent hatred for McDowell
Haughey developed a particular animosity towards McDowell, who rivalled O'Malley as his pet hate figure in the PDs. 'I have seen fairly nasty pieces of work come into this House in my long career here and you are aiming well towards becoming one of the best, he told McDowell during one Dáil exchange. 'Wagging a threatening finger at me, Deputy McDowell, cuts no ice. I was about to say that I do not particularly blame you for your irresponsibilities but I do blame your colleague, Deputy Des O'Malley, because he has Government experience."
