The key to realistically paint materials is to understand the "Specularity Spectrum" (term made up by me). Once you understand how reflective or not something is, you can roughly deduce how much you need to emphasize form shadows vs reflections (highlights), or whether to combine both.

Info graphic explaining the specularity spectrum (a term I made up), comparing how reflective or dull some materials are compared to others. On the one extreme end there's a mirror (maximum reflectivity); on the other end a dull material like Vantablack or rough wood (least reflectivity).

Artists feel pressured to make new art too quickly at the moment. Normalise artists fucking disappearing for months. Just walk off into the woods for a year and come back with a single sketch. It’s good for you

if you made art this year, you did well. a sketch, even if it was scrapped ; a poem, even if it was deleted — mattered. you put thought to paper, you engaged with the creative alchemy of turning feeling to something tangible. doesn't matter if you weren't productive "enough." or good "enough."

seashell fae

Digital painting of a merman sitting on a clam-shell bed, holding a pearl. The merman has scaly green skin on his forearm and legs. His hands are webbed, there are fins on the sides of his forearms, and a shiny pearl is resting in his grasp. Instead of human feet, his legs end in a pair of fins/fish tails. He has blond hair, the same color as the loin cloth he's wearing, and he's perched on the clam-shell bed with a ton of fish swimming around him.

It’s somewhat soothing to know I’m not alone. 2024 has been such an odd year for me mentally, blindsided breakups with longterm friends, lots of being ghosted by people who were promising me work & somewhere in the back of my head the constant looming feeling that I don’t belong & am not wanted.

I've been going through multiple bouts of extreme hopeless depression and then the pendulum swings to feelings of I'm gonna get my life in order and back on track multiple time a day for weeks and it is tiring. I don't have the energy for either of those moods.

⚠️PSA ABOUT SCAMMERS There's been an uptick in impersonators who target users with easily swappable handles (i's for l's, o's for 0's, varying repeated letters, etc) They will always 1) block the original artist 2) target users who have replied with interest, either thru QRPs, replies, or DMs (+)
