A judge denied my niece a public defender because she “wasn’t facing jail time.” She plead no contest and that same judge sentenced her to 30 days in jail. 🤷‍♀️ It was eventually overturned on appeal with a recommendation by the prosecutor.

Public defender case loads are routinely multiples of that assigned to prosecutors and many make a fraction of a prosecutor's salary. States also use them to tax the poor, which incentivizes them to be overworked, too. We need a universal FREE right to counsel.

The judge tells them to take out a home equity loan to pay for a lawyer. It happens all the time. Public defenders are heroes. They do amazing work under some of the most difficult circumstances of any lawyer in the world. Also, our system of public defense in this country is irredeemably broken.

The judge then has discretion to appoint the public defender, conditionally appoint the public defender, or deny the public defender, based solely on a sheet of paper. That's how a homeowner with an underwater mortgage can be denied a public defender.

Republicans have a plan to go after abortion pills nationwide, and they'd very much like you not to hear about it until the day after you vote. This is wild. The strategists in the White House have told Todd Blanche's DOJ to hold off on their promised enforcement of the Comstock Act, which will outlaw the abortion pill nationally, until after the election. Once it's lame-duck time, one conservative in touch with the administration told The Washington Sun, "the gloves will be off." The White House now says the story is fake news, but they're ignoring Trump's FDA commissioner telling his staff to stall their mifepristone "safety review" until after the November election.
The Comstock Act, passed in 1873 when women couldn't vote, explicitly bans the Post Office or any common carrier (UPS, FedEx, etc.) from shipping anything that can be used for abortion; it just hasn't been enforced since the 1930s. But if fully enforced, it could even cripple the ability of clinics in Blue states to perform surgical abortions by outlawing the transportation of the devices uniquely used for those procedures. The regime doesn't want this discussed before November 3rd because it's so unpopular, which is exactly why you should forward this to every woman you know, and every man who loves one, before they vote.
