AAI CEO Dr Sheila Gilheany yesterday outlined some of the 'shocking numbers' around alcohol's impact on road safety to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport. AAI is calling on government to set breath test targets and ensure resources are made available to reach them.

The delay to Ireland's world-leading alcohol labelling regulations gets special mention as a prime example of the power of the alcohol lobby and industry's ease of access to the corridors of power nationally and internationally.

AAI CEO Sheila Gilheany outlines in The Irish Times how Government receptions funded by Diageo reinforce industry ties & grant access to policymakers for an industry that costs taxpayers about €14bn a year, likely double that of tobacco. Govt would not accept tobacco sponsorship, why is alcohol ok?

On average, every day more than 1,000 people in Ireland get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. Fewer than 14 of them will be caught. Ireland has the lowest level of roadside breath test checkpoints in the EU, while alcohol is involved in over a third of driver deaths on our roads.

February is oesophageal cancer awareness month. Alcohol causes at least 7 types of cancer including oesophageal cancer. Alcohol health information labels are crucial to efforts to reduce incidences of cancer in Ireland. There can be no further delay to labelling.

Have you ever felt ‘bombarded’ with junk food & alcohol messaging? Trinity Business School have created a calendar to show what that means - despite 25 years of healthy eating policies Ireland does not have a healthy food & alcohol environment @tcddublin.bsky.social Visit www.tcd.ie/media/tcd/he...

While health information labels can still be found on some alcohol products, it is disappointing to see some producers remove the labels again to hide the facts from their customers in Ireland. There can be no further delay to labelling @micheal-martin.bsky.social @simonharrisireland.bsky.social

That so many different alcohol producers added health info labels to their products before it had become mandatory shows just how easily labelling can be done. Industry's issue isn't the label itself, it's the facts on the label. There can be no further delay to this vital public health legislation.

Despite the industry scaremongering, many wine producers have already adjusted to putting health info labels on bottles set for the Irish market - labels can already be found on multiple products in shops. Why seek to delay what is already law? #stickwithlabels

Great @irishtimes.com letter by @ralphhurleyodwyer.bsky.social summing up exactly why Govt must increase alcohol excise duties in next Budget. Each year, alcohol costs Ireland billions in healthcare, policing & lost productivity. Alcohol taxation reduces consumption while also raising vital revenue
Alcohol consumption and tax
Sir, – The recent report showing a 4.5 per cent drop in alcohol consumption in Ireland last year (“Alcohol consumption falls 4.5 per cent, putting Irish at European average,” June 9th), is welcome news, reflecting healthier public attitudes and the success of evidence-based policy, including minimum unit pricing.
However, the suggestion from the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI) that this progress should now justify a cut in alcohol excise duty is deeply misguided.
Alcohol continues to cause enormous harm in Irish society, with thousands of lives lost or devastated every year through liver and heart disease, dementia, breast cancer, domestic abuse and more.
Each year, alcohol costs the Irish State billions in healthcare, policing and lost productivity. Alcohol taxation remains one of the few public tools that reduces consumption while raising vital revenue to offset just a small fraction of the costs alcohol imposes on society. If anything, our alcohol excise rates urgently need revision as despite rising costs and inflation, they have remained essentially unchanged since 2014.
Most Irish citizens do not know or understand the risks of alcohol consumption. The dangers of alcohol, particularly its links to cancer, cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline, remain hugely under-recognised.
The unambiguous position of the World Health Organisation needs to be better known: no level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health. – Yours, etc,
DR RALPH HURLEY O’DWYER,
Specialist Registrar
in Public Health Medicine,
Dublin.

In today's @irishtimes.com Prof Frank Murray outlines how Irish people have a right to know the inherent health risks of alcohol consumption while Government has a responsibility to inform them. Health info labels on alcohol products give consumers the power to make informed decisions.

In today's @irishtimes.com 76 advocates call on govt to stay the course & introduce health info labels on alcohol products as planned. Micheál Martin & Simon Harris have faced down ferocious industry lobbying in the past & must do so again now. For full list see: alcoholireland.ie/take-action/...
