Any piece on pop music in 2026 would benefit from doing a thought experiment of the US being a secondary player on the world stage to see what happens. Starting there gets you to more productive analysis that doesn't involve staring at the Hot 100/Billboard 200 wondering what's "wrong."

generally every year i can see the appeal and draw of a buzzy new artist even if its one i don't particularly like but i cannot for the life of me understand why the supposed music listening public is choosing to listen to Sienna Spiro

When I was a kid the top 10 songs on the Hot 100 were read out weekly by the principal over the loudspeaker with morning announcements. Then they played the No. 1 song in full instead of the Pledge of Allegiance. And if you didn't stand up and sing along you were expelled for not being patriotic.

Why are we so desperate for a monoculture as if there isn't value in our niche circles and smaller communities? Why do we crave the validation of a mainstream collective that doesn't exist? Why do we feel to betrayed and incensed to not be included in communities and cultures we have no interest in?

Feels weird to have SPX coming up this weekend and not be mentally preparing for it. Been honestly pretty bummed that this will be my first year not going. :[ Hopefully next year even if I get turned down again I can find a way to go, even as just a visitor. Life just needs to Chill at some point.

Thank god for Tom giving Lin-Manuel Miranda his flowers. I am so exhausted by the hatedom he’s developed solely for being a deeply passionate theater kid. ”We Don’t Talk About Bruno” especially is one of his finest works.

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...

stick a pin in this metaphor

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.

One of the things that’s interesting about this whole discourse is that of all the “out of touch”/microculture issues this is in theory the most trivial to solve - you can listen to a hit song in barely more time than it takes you to write a skeet about never hearing of it
