Lovely Caturday.

So close. Walking that ridge with a foot of snow burying the rocks was challenging, though I’m not sure I’d have felt less fear if I could see them. Switchbacked down once I could see a way through the rocks. Did not trust the snow on the steep slope. Next year.
View of The Ramp from the ridge below it. There’s about a foot of snow up there. Warm afternoon made the snow stick to my katoolas!

Evening light is fading fast. Long before DST ends, usable evening light is already done. Headlamp season is here!
Sunset across the Inlet. Clouds. Orange. Mountains. Water. Trees, probably with yellow leaves—hard to tell in the dusk.

So. My cat cheeks his medicine. He fights me giving him the pills. When that doesn’t work, he holds it in his mouth until I let him go. Then he SPITS IT OUT right in front of me. So we try again until he either swallows it or spits it out when I’m not looking.

With each hike in the Chugach the terrain becomes more familiar, mountains become more individualized. Pics help me learn. My neighbor told me today that I seem really good at knowing which mountain is which. I chuckled, because it takes a ton of repetition for me to feel oriented anywhere.
View up Ship Lake Pass from Flattop. On the left, the O’Malleys, and the Ramp hidden in clouds. The Wedge on the right.

So a friend and I just watched The Graduate after she learned I’d never seen before and it’s . . . every bit as disturbing as I imagined it would be. And then some.

Brisk up in the mountains today and too much wind to summit. Catching the last days of fall hiking always fun. The pass was beautiful.
Wind and occasional falling ice particles up Ship Creek pass.

Coming off Mt Baldy this evening, surrounded by a large group of people I’d mostly never met, I enjoyed seeing the familiar Sleeping Lady. Navigating has always been hard but with attention and exploration and more years here than anywhere else, I’m enjoying both orientation and deeper rootedness.

Lovely evening. The light and color and air this time of year are so crisp. Cottonwoods smell so sweet.
View of Turnagain Arm. Spruce tree front left. Scrubby hills and mountains to the right. Water with yellow sunset and clouds in the distance.

My first training in medical work was how to triage—“sick or not sick?” It really was pretty black and white in the village. Could I manage it, or not? My kids subscribe to the bandaid philosophy. “Sometimes, mom, a kid needs a bandaid for comfort.” I had to pivot with my cat this evening.
Purple wall on left, cream-colored linoleum floor center front, brown faux-wood door back right. In the center is a long-hair gray tabby cat curiously looking around the clinic exam room.

My evening task is before me. Glad I planted so much that I’m still eating thinnings in September.
Two colanders of carrots. On the left, a few cleaned and trimmed. On the right, fresh from the garden, with parts of tops and taproots and plenty of dirt.

SB 89 passed and my profession is now in state statute, less vulnerable to the whims of a small board. I’m grateful to all who worked on this—especially @lgtobin.bsky.social who sponsored this bill with her whole heart, from a place of such deep respect for one of the backbone professions in AK.

I see particular sprigs and branches start to turn yellow and the hillsides turning red. But so many leaves still green. Then I look out another window in this hazy evening light with cold rainy mist, and I see it. Fall is here. That tree over there, is a blur of gold tinged with disappearing green.

One of the interesting things about Lisbourne is that he will interact with history and/or make some social criticisms. Like this one about his nightmares as a child about Project Chariot, since he grew up at Point Hope. Or when he's criticized presence of alcohol.

I was so excited for today’s hike. Ultimately the group turned around as it was too cold and windy to continue up as planned. But certainly hope to try again, so beautiful out there.
View looking down Powerline Pass on a windy, rainy September afternoon. Foreground green tundra, hemlock mid ground, yellow shrubs in the valley. Hiking poles and boots visible.

Got to the episode in The Crown where the London Fog kills people and I looked at my eldest and observed, “This show is really about calling us out on how long we’ve known these problems existed” and they gave me a Cheshire grin. We must not keep kicking the can down the road.

Thanks to the Bluesky folks in #Fairbanks and especially @arcticgoddess.bsky.social for a fun gathering and sending me to a state cabin for the first time (embarrassing to admit I’ve never stayed in one!) As a bonus I caught a glimpse of the lunar eclipse on the way out Chena River Road last night.

this is annoying of me to post, but i really was dead scared about this climate reality in like 1997. people are surprised that the earth's habitability could break down within a human lifespan but the science was mostly all there 30 years ago and available to anyone willing to reckon with it
