A prominent shack on a derelict pier in downtown Juneau was torn down on Thursday. The pier is owned by AJT Mining Properties, a sister company of Alaska Electric Light and Power. CEO Alec Mesdag said the company decided to remove the shack because it was a safety hazard.

A sixth Juneau man was detained by federal immigration authorities. Mario Alberto Trejo Reynoso, 27, was detained at Lemon Creek on Sept. 4, and moved to Anchorage Correctional Complex on Sept. 30. An Alaska Department of Corrections spokesperson said he left state custody on Oct. 4.

It’s anchors aweigh for Juneau’s cruise season. The last ship, the Norwegian Encore, leaves Tuesday night. The final tally of passengers who stepped off cruise ships into Juneau this year hasn’t been released yet, but it’s expected to be close to 1.7 million people.

Ballots have now been received from 642 people for Alaska's Nov. 3 general election, according to the latest report from the Alaska Division of Elections. Ballots sometimes aren't logged immediately, so the actual number of voters may exceed that.
