In fairness, the memorial includes some spots where passerby can sit down for a moment.

hard to imagine a more blatant boomer self-insert than Sorkin positing an investigative reporter at a major daily newspaper who doesn't know how to use google maps (in 2019!) but is extensively versed in the history of Broadway musicals

I see this on Prime Video a lot. Lots of genre deep cuts from the 70s-90s with ATROCIOUS transfers.

There's a new movie directed by Ben Affleck, who once directed a Best Picture winner, that begins streaming on Netflix tomorrow. Critics are under embargo to post their reviews/reactions until 7pm this evening. Take that as you will.

Fitting that my review of NAZA, a new documentary from co-directors of No Other Land, ran on October 7th. I think I make a strong case for the film, so I hope you will share this and go see it however you can. If it's not playing near you, don't worry: it'll be on The Guardian website next month.

I was in two Fantasy Football leagues. I dissolved one, then turned it into a Fantasy Trivia league I co-commissioned with @padrock.bsky.social, then dissolved after several years. I think I still auto-draft in the other, which exists more as a football-flavored group chat nowadays.

Today is the 20th anniversary of The Departed hitting theaters, aka the best flip phone movie ever made and Marky Mark's last great role, which means it's also been 20 years of annoying complaints from people who think they're smarter than the movie because of its last shot.

I really dig this Chris' post on last week's Charli XCX show. I was also there, and was struck by the strange parasocial reaction to it on reddit and elsewhere. Like Chris, I thought the technical snafus led to moving vulnerability, a reminder of why we see live music in the first place.

More to come, but I did not care for The Social Reckoning. I did, however, laugh ruefully when Jeremy Allen White's character mansplains Broadway musicals, then later says men only get accused of mansplaining when they're winning an argument - seemingly without any self-awareness.

I hope Matt Reeves resolves his personal reasons for stepping away from The Batman 2 however best he can, but it's getting to be kind of funny how long this movie will take. Fun fact: Pattinson turned 40 this year, and Bale finished The Dark Knight Rises by the time he turned 38.

Between The History of Concrete, Naza, Musk, You Can See Everything, and My Undesirable Friends Part 2, I can't think of a period where there have been so many buzzy, exciting documentaries releasing all around the same time. Put another way:
The screenshot from Altman's The Player where it says "Movies now more than ever" on the side of a sound stage, but I used MS Paint to cross out "movies" and crudely write in "docs" instead.

If it weren't so loud and off-putting, Digger might have been an interesting failure. Nevertheless.

My first memory is being frightened by a live performance of Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf.” If we’re talking movies, I think it’s this - also related to classical music.

Today is a good day for rock around DC. Smashing Pumpkins are playing Baltimore. At Merriweather, you can see that Tom Morello festival with Foo Fighters, Cypress Hill, and Bruce Springsteen. At The Anthem, there is a hardcore show with Knocked Loose and Denzel Curry. I am going to the latter.

No one is cool and 90s/00s indie is alive at The Lincoln Theater, where The Get Up Kids are opening for The Format. I am confused by the enthusiasm for the latter, who are FINE, since the former are secret pop GENIUSES. Also, there are multiple babies here who have no ear protection. Bad form!

40. Mare of Easttown, but make it the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Readable and with strong characters, even though you know where it will go. It is kind of funny how many sections are written *EXACTLY* like a repurposed screenplay.

Re-upping my @wcp.bsky.social review of Verity, a trashy erotic thriller where Anne Hathaway has so much fun playing a narcissistic psychopath that she produces genuine giggles in the scene where she contemplates smothering her infant with a pillow.
