Already in development... The follow-up to The Poetry of Cultural Debris is taking shape. BAD TASTE A Poetry Workshop in Misbehaving Precisely What happens to poetry when we stop trying to demonstrate good taste? Good taste can make bad poems. Booking opens soon.
Promotional poster for Bad Taste: A Poetry Workshop in Misbehaving Precisely with Alan Parry. Bold yellow and burgundy retro typography sits beside a playful kitsch still life featuring a classical marble bust in bright pink sunglasses, a pink flamingo, leopard print, an ornate gold frame, a pink cocktail, red rose, sequins and a disco ball. The Broken Spine logo appears in the top-right corner.

Please, just read poetry because you love it. Read slowly, reread, abandon a book halfway through, return to it six months later… whatever. Not every human pleasure needs turning into an obvious promotional campaign that everyone dutifully jumps aboard until reading becomes another public display.
A clearly tongue-in-cheek meme satirising performative poetry reading challenges. Beside an enormous stack of attractively arranged books, a ring light and camera phone are ready to photograph them. Text reads: “Remember, guys… Photograph the stack. Count the books. Post the hashtag. Reading them is a lovely optional extra 😌💅.” The exaggerated setup and playful emojis make the joke’s sarcastic intent clear.

My earring collection has officially outgrown random drawers. New home: one tiny shipping container. I regret nothing.
A small yellow metal shipping container with the word "KING" printed in large black letters across the side sits on a soft mustard-yellow blanket. Along one edge are smaller printed words reading "Mediterranean Shipping Co." The background is softly blurred, featuring colourful floral wallpaper with birds, butterflies, and tropical leaves, creating a warm contrast between the industrial-style storage box and the vibrant décor.A collection of alternative earrings arranged in a neat grid on a dark background. The selection includes black-and-white checkerboard studs, plain black circular studs, black hand gesture studs, silver skull studs, novelty screw-shaped studs, small silver disc studs, dangling scissor earrings in silver, Andy Warhol-inspired tomato soup can and banana studs, yellow, orange and pink lightning bolt earrings, Alien face huggers, and polished silver mirror balls. The collection combines punk, pop culture, industrial, and playful design influences in a cohesive alternative style.

For #FragmentsFriday host @matthewmcsmith.bsky.social of @blackboughpoetry.bsky.social A warning scratched into the tiled walls of the subconscious. A fragment about desire, denial, & the burdens we bury until they begin to bury us.
A black background image displaying a fragmentary poem in white text. The title at the top reads “Toilet Wall Warning”. Below, the poem appears in four separated sections:

“protect yoursel’
from yens”

“do not tempt

“repress until it kills”

“there are possess—

The typography is large, minimalist, and left-aligned, with deliberate line breaks and a dash splitting the word “possessions.”

Family day out at the tattooist’s 🖤 Three of us. One studio. No overthinking, rather meaning made permanent. At Amethyst Ink, tattooed by Z. Clean lines. Solid trust. No bullshit. Memory. Mischief. Love. Ink well spent.
Close-up of a fresh red tattoo on Mrs P showing two interlinked, hand-drawn hearts on skin. The ink is glossy and slightly raised. A tattoo artist’s purple-gloved hands are visible below, resting on protective paper marked with red and purple ink. The heart design is inspired by Vivienne Westwood’s heart-shaped handbag.Close-up of my left ankle showing a matching black linework gravestone tattoo engraved with the words “IN HELL.” The gravestone appears cracked and weathered, with grass drawn at the base. My ankle sits above a black sock and a black Dr. Martens boot with yellow stitching, completing the complementary tattoo pair.Close-up of my daughter’s left ankle resting on a black tattoo chair. A small black linework tattoo shows a gravestone engraved with the words “SEE YOU,” surrounded by simple grass lines. She is wearing leopard-print Dr. Martens boots, patterned socks, and brown corduroy trousers slightly rolled up.

Tonight’s writing session spat this out, With a Lover (after Joan Armatrading). A poem about saying anything, doing anything, & meaning it. Dropping it here before I overthink it.
A black background displays a white serif-font poem titled “With a Lover (after Love And Affection – Joan Armatrading).”
The poem is arranged in short, staggered lines with large vertical spacing. It reads:

“we could
say
anything

do
anything

start a war
or a religion
with our hands

play with firebugs
small mercies

dress shop
in shared heat
& borrowed fabrics
with Charlie’s girls

anything

really
roll
really

i am open

Well, this is almost too much!
I was afraid that if I kept that light on in my brain
all I would notice is that I’m mostly triggered all or most of
the time. I’m so serious. The train triggers me, the walk to the
train, the unwanted eye contact, the way my body behaves when
I notice that I’m being noticed. I figure when someone like me is
hyper in tune with their trigger light, it’s tantamount to a gazelle
in the Serengeti — the feeling that something is always coming
to eat you.

Mrs P and I last night ahead of an impromptu Friday night out.
A black-and-white portrait of two adults against a dark background. On the left is a person with short, wavy hair, glasses, and a moustache, smiling softly. On the right is a person with shoulder-length hair, wearing subtle makeup and a necklace, looking calmly toward the camera. Both are dressed in dark clothing, and the lighting highlights their faces against the black backdrop.

A poem titled I Want appears in black text on a white background. The poem reads:

I Want

you
pulling
at the edges of me

i want us
to forget our names

i want to see
videos of you
tying yourself in knots

i want
your red flowers
pinching my breath

i want
senseless talk
& you playing
goofy with me

i want
your leg against mine

i want
your hand
at the back of my neck
feeling the pulse

i want
your head
on my chest—
asleep

i want you
thinking of me
all dayA continuation of the poem I Want is shown in black text on a white background, spread across two columns. The text reads:

i want
the idiot hots
& your filthy mouth

i want you
to hand yourself over
to be filled &
overcome

i want
a comfortable silence
to fold around us
like bedsheets

i want
weekends spent
lying on each other

i want
the small things
to sit at your feet
to watch you eat

i want
to hold your waist

i want
your hair
wet & messy
in a hotel room
in tallinn

i want
you to tell me
how we oughta
spend the night

i want
to know the one thing i said
you can’t let go of

i want
the migraines
& the hard-ons

i want
the marks
you leave

i want you
naked & tired
with dark circles
around your eyes

i want you
sweaty & stressed

i want you
to wear me down
like water
on stone

slow
& smooth

i want
to drown in
your ocean-floor eyes

i want us
to become
shadows on the wall

i want you
to take fistfuls of me
to shake my teeth looseThe final lines of the poem I Want appear in black text on a white background. The text reads:

& i want
to wake up
sore

Today was a bad, bad day. I didn't think I'd get through, but I have. Just.
I’m standing on top of Miller’s Bridge, looking straight into the camera. My face shows the enormous emotional pain I’m feeling — my eyes are heavy, my mouth tight with tension. The wind tugs at my hair against the pale, overcast sky, capturing a moment of raw vulnerability.

I stand indoors facing the camera, wearing glasses, a black long-sleeved top, black skinny jeans, and black boots. I have short dark hair and a moustache, with my hands in my pockets. Spoke to Mrs P about my male crushes, she double dared me to shave my tash like Mike Wozniak. I resisted at first… but here we are — otherwise clean-shaven for the first time since 2004. All his fault, really. Here’s my male celeb crush collage too: Wozniak, Vince Vaughn, & George Clarke.

This poem is from a WIP called #FuckMeLikeGraffiti. It’s called Softcore Mirrors (after The Honeymoon — Juno Calypso). Poem & self-portrait that sparked it below. I've written extensively on my gender, now I'm focusing on my sexual self. I'm expecting a dwindling readership at this stage 😂
Text of the poem reads:

Softcore Mirrors

A woman with voluminous red hair sits nude in a heart-shaped pink bathtub, her back to the camera. The tub is filled with white bubbles, and she’s surrounded by mirrors reflecting her image again and again—each reflection slightly different, creating a sense of repetition and self-surveillance. The bathroom is pastel pink with soft, artificial lighting, evoking a retro, dreamlike atmosphere.
