Important piece in @opiniojuris.bsky.social by Dr Godfrey Odongo on the potential for universal jurisdiction to develop further in Africa. The article looks at how stronger domestic legal frameworks could help address accountability gaps for international crimes.

Very happy to be back at the University of Geneva last week to give a lecture as part of Prof. Robert Kolb’s seminar. We spoke about how national courts can fight impunity for international crimes, a question that shapes much of @civitasmaxima.bsky.social. #UniversalJurisdiction

Why did CM and its partners intervene in support of the Sudanese plaintiffs in the BNP Paribas appeal? BNP Paribas is appealing a U.S. verdict based on Swiss law. The Swiss Government argues that the conduct at issue was lawful under civil, banking and sanctions law.

⚖️ A narrow reading of Swiss law is at the heart of a BNP Paribas appeal. Civitas Maxima, ACAT-Switzerland, @ecchr.bsky.social, InterJust, @icjurists.bsky.social, Keesa ADR and Peter & Moreau have filed an amicus curiae in support of Sudanese plaintiffs before the U.S. Court of Appeals.

Four years ago, Swiss Attorney General Stefan Blättler wrote in Le Temps that confronting international crimes was a moral and legal obligation. In my new article, I revisit this through the BNP Paribas case, raising wider questions about corporate accountability, Swiss law and international crimes.
